I was just think today of some neat things once could do with computing..

- the ability to drag and drop a file or folder on a .tar.gz, .zip, .bz2 compressed folder and it would automatically extract the compressed folder add the stuff you drag and dropped, recompress it self and delete the expanded folder may be in some file managers already

-loading the desktop while you begin to login not probable for multi-user possible with "readahead"

-since you asked for what others think would be cool, I think it would be neat to be able to use a USB gamepad to navigate instead of the mouse, not as a normal means of use but for when I want to play a game and don't want to mouse to it and then switch to the controller. This probably can be done, I just haven't looked for it yet.

-Compiz-Fusion integration development with MPX (touch screen type technology) and assign gestures http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olWjnfBoY8E

-I would like Linux to manage my bandwidth usage: for example, be able to assign a precise amount for Torrents, for HTTP: downloads, for web browing, etc.

-3d ish file browser not like Xcruise, but a little similar, it would be more usable and way better graphics http://xcruiser.sourceforge.net/demo.html

ok, so how do I make this possible? and what do you think would be cool?

I think certain file managers can already do this. Not sure though.

loading the desktop while you begin to login.
I can't see how it can load the desktop before you login, since each login is tailored to be its own session, without having logged in it doesn't know which window manager or desktop environment to log you into, what background to use, etc.

Some speech to text tools would be nice but those are incredibly hard to code and manage, so I understand the lack of those.

I want to see Compiz-Fusion integration development with MPX (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Co3FONI6kHU&feature=related)

I want to see people be able to assign gestures to do composite desktop tasks like spinning a cube, shuffling and switching windows, zooming, unzooming, interacting with hardware.

This kind of technology is already publically available, and will be offered as a mainstream solution in just a few years from your Dell's and HP's, except they will be in the shape of coffee tables or desks. I don't want to see this technology be an excuse for windows to trump linux from a functional standpoint.

If I understand this post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=565651) correctly, you might be able to do that with readahead.

That is neat, not as neat a surfaces but still pretty cool.

pretty cool concept. For me, though, most of the length of boot up time is before GDM. I don't have much wait after the login.

It would be easier to just set it up to automatically boot to a certain user skipping the login all together.

You can set the max speed for torrents through some torrent programs. Azureus and Deluge (with a plugin) come to mind.

I have a lot of things in my head that i think would be neat. I wont go into detail (i'm not a programmer) i just like to think of neat programs and the features for them, was a 3d ish file browser not like Xcruise, but a little similar, it would be more usable and way better graphics, i just have it down on paper at the moment
