I know K.Mandla is starting a series of interviews with people from the ubutuforums. It's hosted on his blog, but I wanted to do something different.
When reading the Interview with Mike Basinger in this weeks newsletter, I got the idea about this post. It would be nice if we got to know one another by answering some questions. Just do a copy/paste on the questions and put in your answers. That way everyone who reads them will know a little more about you and your affiliation with computers, Linux and Ubuntu.
If you feel uncomfortable with the first question or any parts of it, just answer no reply.

Tell as much as you’re willing about your “real” life — name, age, gender, location, family, religion, profession, education, hobbies, etc.
My name is Irv, I am a 69 year old male, married 47 years to the same lady I fell in love with. We have 6 children, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. We are both Christians. I am retired and my wife is just tired. I finished High School and have some college. I retired from an IT job, but do computer/Internet work from my home. My hobbies are computers, and fishing.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
In 1978 or 1979 I bought my first computer. An Atari LX800. It was all up-hill from there. I have tried different flavors of Linux for the past 5 years but started using Ubuntu about a year and a half ago.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
Yes, Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
I use three computers with Ubuntu. One laptop, and two servers. One server is running edubuntu.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
I join the first time I logon. I believe it was the same day I installed Ubuntu.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
Yes and Yes.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
Yes and Yes.

What distros do you regularly use?
Ubuntu.

What software do you regularly use?
Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Nvu, Evolution Mail (for the memos and calendar), Scribus, Eclipse, BibleTime, gedit, Krecipes, KmyMoney, Bluefish Editor, the Terminal, GIMP image editor, Xsane Image Scanner, K3b, not to mention all the games.
What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
I have two favorite; Firefox and OpenOffice. My least is Evolution Mail, I like the memos and calendar but not the mail part of it.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
The first time I downloaded it and tried it, I just liked it. It was easy to use, but it took some getting use to. I guest I like it more then any windows I used because there was no hassle loading Anti-virus software. And I like the fact I could see what was happening under the surface. (at the line command) and in the package manager.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
I have told many about it, and have install it on 13 computers for others so far.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
I would like to see some standards across Linux distos. As far as Ubuntu goes, It is just going in the right direction. So the future looks good for it.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Use it, support it, because it has a real future. Or better said, “Try it, you'll like it!”

My name is Chris, I'm 16 from Tennessee, Knoxville area, and i'm male. I'm in high school, and i dont really care for religion.

My hobbies re IRC and learning about computers

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?

In computers about 3 years ago, i got a computer in my room, (windows ME it was horrible) first night i got a virus. About a year ago i became interested in Linux, and i tested as many distros as i could, and i fell in love with ubuntu 7.10. I've been using Ubuntu for about a little over a month and i love every day using it, and learning it.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?

I Ubuntu as my main system, and i use virtualbox + windows xp to use mIRC (i know most people say it sucks, but... irc is almost impossible without it for me) one of these days i'll try something else, and only reason i use mIRC in xp is cause in wine it keeps disappearing

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?

No, i have 3 systems in my house, 2 xp's and 1 Ubuntu

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?

About a month after i started to use Ubuntu, but i've known about it for a long time, i use it regularly for my problems and usually find my answers

Do you help others? Do others help you?

I love to help others but usually someone else gives a straight answer before i do, but i might give my 2 cents, i'm still a new, but i'm learning fast, and i use the forum as a whole for help

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?

No, and no, i never heard of this until now

What distros do you regularly use?

Ubuntu of course, why would i use anything else?

What software do you regularly use?

Banshee, amsn, compiz, beagle, limewire, deluge, xcruise (when i'm bored) firefox, virtualbox, ksnapshot, openoffice word processor (for school mostly) movie player, smplayer, and last but not least gwenview

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?

hrmmm my favorite would have to be firefox lol in general that is, i always have banshee running though... and my least favorite? well they're all essential in my opinion, but i hate amarok it loads my music collection soooooo sloooow, (18,849 items last count)

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?

I believe i forced myself to use linux, just to fit in with my friends, and the cool effects... but i use it as i would xp

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?

Yes, i actually plan on burning some cds for my teachers and hand them a info sheet about ubuntu, and i try to mention when i can that i use linux, if i said Ubuntu most people wouldnt know what i was talking about. I dont think i've installed ubuntu on anyone's system or anything, but i showed a truck driver one time and he had previous knowledge of linux, he definitely was going to download Ubuntu after i showed him my desktop effects.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?

There's actually alot i'd love to see... i'd love to see linux be put into schools around the world, not just in poor countries, with full blown educational classes in PDF's and such for classes k-12. You essentially learn more when you use linux.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?

I am what i am because of what we all are.

I prefer to read K.Mandla's original :) Plus it's nicer to read it when the interviews come out occasionally, than having to sift through page after page in a thread.

Finally it's a shame because you are really taking someone elses idea and trying to mass produce it here.

As it once said on a bottle of perfume I used:

I am William Small (well, not really, but I can't disclose my real identity without some trolls (former associates) waiting for the opportunity to find my identity.

I am currently a student, age 16. I work on computers, and solve different computer problems in my neighborhood, and build computers. I have my own blog, where I post alot of my discoveries and such at:
http://php.8ez.com/drsmall/blog/

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
A few of my friends used different Linux distributions back when I was on windows, and I had no idea what "linux" even was. I was running Windows XP Media Center Edition, at the time, and the processor or something was bad on it. The system would freeze at random times, for no apparent reason.

I felt that if Linux would mess up my system, I wouldn't be out much, so I felt that I needed to try. This was back in November of '06. I ordered my first Ubuntu 6.06 cd from Shipit, which arrived in November, and I was playing around on it all that afternoon, from the Live CD.

That evening I asked my parents if I could install it, got their permission, and now I use Ubuntu and have never turned back :)

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
I have another system that runs LinuxMint, but I hardly ever do anything on it. It was just a test machine. My computer has two hard drives in it, and the second (80GB) has Ubuntu Server Edition loaded on it, and runs with Xorg, and VirtualBox. (I mainly designed an entire drive for VirtualBox).

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
LinuxMint derives from Ubuntu, so yes, I could say I do. My sister's computer also runs Ubuntu 7.04.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
I joined the forums the same day, because when I installed Ubuntu on my sister's machine (that same night), GRUB totally wrecked, and I was on the forums looking for help. It turned out, she wanted Windows back, and lived with Windows for another 5-6 Months, until she finally braved it and wanted Ubuntu.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
Yes, I am on the Beginner's Team, and I make it my main focus to help as many people as I can in the Absolute Beginners Area, and have learned alot of stuff, just from there. And yes, other's do help me. I won't name any names, that way no body gets left out :D

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
Yes, to both. Check my signature for that information.

What distros do you regularly use?
Ubuntu 7.04

What software do you regularly use?
Mozilla Firefox, Terminal, IceWM, Xchat, Gaim, PcManFM

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
Probably my most favorite would be SSH. I absolutely love ssh for some reason. My least favorite, hmmm... Maybe mplayer. I never cared much for it's interface, but I have heard it is powerful. I prefer VLC over mplayer though.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
Curiosity. I love to experiment, and I had used XP for years, and knew alot about it, which became boring over time. I wanted something new to try.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
My sister. That's probably about all. I have told my friends, and some of the other pc tech's I know, but none of them use Linux or Ubuntu.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
It would be grand to walk in BestBuy or Walmart and walk to the computer section and see computers lying around in boxes with Ubuntu stickers on them, rather than Vista stickers.

I would like to see Ubuntu make the market, and see alot of folk using it, as a every day desktop, and not have it just for 'linux geeks' anymore.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
If you have a problem, use google and the forums to search out your problem first. There are alot of problems that have been answered already, so try that first. If you can't find an answer, or don't know how to word it right, start a new thread and ask the community.

Always ask your questions properly, search it out first, and be nice. :)

Academic from prominent university (humanities), 30+ years old male, married, one kid. Project leader (not IT related). Not a computer freak by any means, but a long cold, dark winter force me to have several hobbies... sort of. I am a family man, but I need time alone from time to time to rest my ears.

If there was no Internet, I would use my pc for work for a few hours, then turn it off. And, open source is not vital to me, competent software is, however it was made, whoever made it.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
I got interested in them when they could help me as productivity tools, and for rare gaming when I was 18.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
Microsoft Windows for WORK, and Linux out of curiosity a few times a week. The lack of professional software force me back into Windows. Actually, this is written in a Windows session. I could easily live without Ubuntu, but I dare not remove it before I do a total reinstall of this PC... but... Never had to. Windows is running flawlessly after 4 years.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
No. I have only one computer.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
AFTER? I had to get help installing it and getting hardware working here. :(

Do you help others? Do others help you?
Yes. Mostly in real life.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
No, why should I. It is a waste of time, utterly useless. It is a number that does not change anything.

What distros do you regularly use?
Only Ubuntu. I need more pro software, not more distros.

What software do you regularly use?
Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator.

What’s your favorite application?
Photoshop!

And what is Your least favorite?
GIMP

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
Just curiosity. I was bored by the Windows XP theme (which I later changed to OpusOS with StyleXP).

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
No, I know no one who are interested, not even a few guys I know from computer science! I know none who need it.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
Evolve faster, faster, faster in a user centered way. Let super geeks have their own StarTrek distro.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Dist-Update will break your system, something!

Well, sorry to disaoppoint, but here goes: male of 38 years,
masters in linguistics and sociology. i'm just a good ol' boy from South Texas
who's managed to see the world and lived to tell about it:guitar:

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
In computers? Damn, that's reaching back; from the Commodore64
i got for Xmas in high school, to scamming gopher sessions in the uni-
versity,to the first time I got an internet connection at home (ca.late 2004-early 2005).

Ubuntu was actually something of a secondary effect. The first time
I got internet in my apartment I went for the distro everyone was talking
about, the Hoary Hedgehog. 19 hours later (no BS!) of downloading the
DVD I fell into the world of ubuntu.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?

It's a bit complicated; I use a quad-boot:
Debian-Etch 32-bits Wow, just Wow. How do you top that?
Debian-Sid 64-bits Ooooh... :guitar:
Ubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn 64-bits
PC-BSD 1.4.1

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
Huh?? I can barely afford one comp as it is

What software do you regularly use?

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
See the previous reply. I do use sauerbraten quite a bit to deal with the
stresses of work.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
It was the first DVD that I was able to download successfuly

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
I've introduced several to Ubuntu, but genuine use? Only a couple-
this is Brazil after all (timid herd mentality based on a pathetically disastrous
educational system  )

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
What I realistically can see is ubuntu- and other distros- having a
bigger role in education. With that, we may yet see the general public using
their computers according to their needs, and not according to the whims
of corporate interests.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Use the brain God gave you! Read the guide to Ubuntu! Okay, more
calmly: People, this is not like exchanging a Ford for a Toyota. The infor-
mation is there; use it.

Well, I'm sexy!

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
I got a TRS-80 Model I when I was 11 years old. I cut my teeth on that computer. I didn't hear about linux until I was about 17 years old, back around 1996. A friend told me about it when I said "someone should make a free version of Windows." Since then, I've threatened to dive into linux and finally did in March of this year.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how may? and what are they?
Yes, I dual boot with Win2k and Ubuntu.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
No. My other PCs run DSL, TinyFlux, and Win98.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
I think I joined around the same time I installed it. Can't remember.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
Sometimes I try, but there's others more experienced than me. Others do a great job in helping me, but most of the time I can find my answers by doing a forum or a Google search.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
I don't really know what you're talking about, so I'm guessing NO.

What distros do you regularly use?
DSL, and now TinyFlux.

What software do you regularly use?
For Linux: Audacity, DeVeDe, Opera, Knotes, XMMS
For Windows: Opera, CDex, EAC, Nero, Creative Wave Studio, Multitrack Studio, Photofiltre, Winamp

I'm still fairly stuck in Windows since there's still not a lot of decent equivalents for what I use.

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
Favorite: Audacity
Least Favorite: Sound Juicer

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
Windows Vista installed on my new PC, and finally deciding to following through with my threat of installing Linux

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
Yes, two people. I installed it on my cousin's PC because they were getting too many viruses. The other person just liked how Ubuntu looked.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
With Linux, more Video editing, recording, and conversion apps. More audio conversion apps, maybe some that actually work.

With Ubuntu, the stable version of Hardy Heron :)

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Google is your friend.

I am known as bobbo my both my parents and my friends, im 14 and male. Live in Edinburgh Scotland and go to high school. Dont believe in any religion and hobbies include Music, Playing Wii and generally just mucking about.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?

I started using computer when i was about 8 after watching my dad play Football Manager 1998 and decided i wanted a shot. I started messing about changing settings and using the Internet aged 10 and started my first open-source project at age 12. I started using Ubuntu when i was 13 and started using it full time at 14.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?

I use Ubuntu 7.10 on my file/torrent/web server and dual boot between Ubuntu 7.10 and Windows XP on my desktop as my family still are stuck on Office etc.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
As above, 2 Ubuntu 7.10 computers.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
About 2 hours. I got totally stuck and decided to get help on the forums.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
I get a lot of help and try to help as much as possible.

What distros do you regularly use?
I use Ubuntu 7.10 regularly as well as the Gparted LiveCD, Super GRUB Disk and less often Slax.

What software do you regularly use?
Firefox, Pidgin, uTorrent, VLC, gnome-terminal, Thunderbird, Gedit

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
My favourite application is uTorrent. Despite it being Windows (I use it through WINE) it is brilliant, incredibly feature full and tiny. The best torrent client on any platform. My least favourite would have to be Windows. Any part of core Windows is awful.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
I heard people talking about it on the Internet and was just intrigued. I never knew there was an alternative to Mac and Windows. Eventually i decided to make the full switch when Windows became completely unusably slow on my new Core 2 Duo PC.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
I have introduced Ubuntu to 2 friends and a few more are interested, and a couple of family members are interested too.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
I would like to see Linux becoming more stable but increasing with the revolutionary new features. I want to see it being more accessible to new users and just continuing with the greatness.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Learn to use the terminal! You might think it is old and uncool but it is totally brilliant. Also set up a LAMP server and make it accessible to the world. It's totally brilliant when you get your first users on a site hosted on your bedroom floor.

Tell as much as you’re willing about your “real” life — name, age, gender, location, family, religion, profession, education, hobbies, etc.
My name is Peter, I am a 24-year-old male living in Madison, Wisconsin, USA (I grew up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin). I am single, and my parents and brother (the only members of my nuclear family) live in Wisconsin. My extended family is spread all over. I am agnostic (or pastafarian depending on the day), I work as a system administrator, I have a BS in Computer Science and am looking to go for a Master's in a year or so. I enjoy basketball, running, hypermiling, programming, bowling, and many games.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
I've been interested in computers since I was 6. I tinkered around with my parent's Apple IIe and even wrote some text-based games for it. I became interested in Linux when I went to college and got a computer of my own. I ended up using it in classes, but I didn't switch my home machine until shortly after graduation. That's when I heard about Ubuntu. I installed it and I never looked back.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
At work, I use Red Hat Enterprise Linux and run Windows XP in a virtual machine. I also run OpenBSD and a little bit of Sparc/Solaris. At home it's 95% Ubuntu with an occasional other distro run in a virtual machine.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
I use 2, my desktop and a low-power media center computer.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
It was these forums and the support provided that I made the switch. So, probably -7 days.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
Yes, and yes, and not just on these forums.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
Yes, but I'm too lazy right now to look up the numbers.

What distros do you regularly use?
Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat Enterprise, CentOS

What software do you regularly use?
Database software, perl, C, Java, homemade stuff (though my programming skills do need a little work), amarok, gnome, firefox, thunderbird, pidgin, gnome-terminal, emacs.

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
Most favorite, the terminal, I can run *all* applications from the terminal and run scripts and programs anytime I want(bwahahaha). Least favorite, nautilus, I find a graphic file browser cumbersome after learning the terminal.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
I had been looking to switch, and a co-worker recommended it to me.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
A few, not many have taken me up on setting up a system for them, though.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
I'd like to see at least major hardware manufacturers and some commercial software (esp. games) at least play nice with Linux, if not outright support it. I'd like to see at least 10% overall market share for Linux, and healthy competition within the Linux and OSS community.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
We were all newbies once, and no one learns Linux in a day. Be patient, and don't be afraid to ask for help. We're really quite nice if you ask nicely.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?I first became interested in computers when I was at Uni in the early 80s. We did a couple of subjects on computing and I really needed the computer for a lot of my work, and didn't want to rely on the computers at Uni so I bought my own. I became interested in Linux in the late 90s. Not sure why, but my computer magazine had a Linux pocketbook including CD with OS and I got curious about dual booting...that was RedHat 6.2 or something. I remained interested in Linux and heard about Ubuntu in about 2005. I had subscribed to my local LUG mailing list and just asked at one stage about Ubuntu. One guy suggested I try it and I haven't looked back.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?I use Ubuntu mainly and Windows XP when I have to, for work.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?I have a laptop and a desktop with Ubuntu and XP on them. XP is hardly even thought of on the desktop but has to be on the notebook.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?I joined about the same time as I started using Ubuntu.

Do you help others? Do others help you?I try to help others when I can. Mainly others help me.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?I'm both.

What distros do you regularly use? I only use Ubuntu but have had a casual look at others.

What software do you regularly use?I regularly use Firefox and Thunderbird, GAIM, Kontact (for PIM), Skype (not as often as I used to), mIRC (in WINE), OpenOffice, but more often now Abiword and Gnumeric

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?Kontact is my favorite. I love Firefox and Thunderbird. Windows is my least favorite.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux? As stated above, as far as using Ubuntu was concerned. I got sick of the constant slowdown in WinXP. The constant wrestle to keep it working nicely on a 6 month old notebook. I'd been interested in Linux for years, but not being an IT person I'd just "been interested". Then I took the plunge. I love it.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?I've mentioned it to a few people but not much interest.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu? I'd love to see more adoption of Linux so more hardware and more software developers will take it seriously. Other than that, it's a nicely held secret :)

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?Linux is not Windows. Come to it with an open mind and don't expect your Windows applications to run on Linux. There are wonderful alternatives. You just have to get used to them.

Innovate don't imitate

;)I don't disagree, but in a way this is entirely different. While K.Mandla is interviewing prominent people, this is simply an oppurtunity for everyone to answer the given questions.

It's not really a copy of the original because there are lots of threads where similar questions are asked.... this is simply more of a who are you type quiz and if anything K.Mandla's is a compilation of all the others, just like this one.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
Arg, around 8 or 9 years ago, when my dad bought some computer from Costco. It wasn't until about four years ago I had heard of Linux and became interested in it. When my CD key was randomly nuked by Windows, I decided to get an Ubuntu 4.10 shipit CD.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
I use Debian Sid on my machines, and it is the OS I use the most. I also keep around Windows Vista Ultimate x64. There is also some space left over on my desktop for testing distributions on.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
I actually have zero computers with Ubuntu. I do use it as my Live-CD though.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
Not long. Sorry, but I cannot get much more specific than that.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
Neither anymore. I used to do both, but got fed up as people started to reply with "You shouldn't use the development version on a production machine." You see, I used to mostly hang out in the development threads...

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
No and no.

What distros do you regularly use?
Debian. Most of the majors get a chance when on my free space, but rarely can they knock it out of Debian's permanent role.

What software do you regularly use?
Iceweasel/Konqueror
Kate
Exaile/Amarok
World of Warcraft
Crysis

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
Amarok is my favorite by a long shot. My least favorite is Rhythmbox; it'll fetch the wrong art for most of my music and then not let me change it.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
I couldn't use Windows anymore.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
Nope. I'll help anybody that comes to me wanting to switch, but I am not a Linux missionary.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
What Cimi has done to the Murrine gtk engine has been near the top of my list for a while. Working 3D with the radeonhd driver is something I am also looking forward to. I would also like to see a splash screen for the boot process that looks good, is easily configurable from a gui, doesn't require a kernel patch, and actually works. I've basically given up on this one.

Tell as much as you’re willing about your “real” life — name, age, gender, location, family, religion, profession, education, hobbies, etc.

I am nobody important. I never was and never will be. I don't want fame and don't want fortunes. I'd like to stay with the love of my life in New Zealand, with a small private patch of grass that we can call our own and wriggle our toes in. I've worked in more fields then I can count off the top of my head. My professional training includes Fine Art and Programming. I am a non-denominational Christian.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?

I discovered GNU/Linux several years ago. I started using it as a curiosity. I only ever used Ubuntu to replace Debian `Sarge' when it was too difficult for me to install and configure properly. When that was no longer necessary I went back to Debian. I've lost most of my interest in prepackaged distributions. I'd like to build my own system from source and maintain it. Doing so would count as my hobby.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?

I use the testing distribution of Debian, codename Lenny. I also have a built-from-source GNU/Linux that fluctuates in variable states of usefulness. I toy with the BSD's from time to time. The partitioner from Sun Microsystem's Solaris installer borked my installation drive, so I haven't ever used it since.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?

I do not currently use any computer with Ubuntu. However, I use Debian or the system I built from source with another desktop that has openSUSE on it.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?

Almost immediately. I just wasn't very active until recently.

Do you help others? Do others help you?

I occasionally point others in the direction I feel they should go to be able to help themselves. I have asked for help very infrequently myself, since I do not have any problem coping with broken functionality until I've learned independently what I need to know about the technology I'm trying to use.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?

Yes, and I don't know.

What distros do you regularly use?

The testing distribution of Debian, codename `Lenny'. That preference is biased by having downloaded and maintained a local copy of the entire package repository ~19gb over Hughes Net satellite ISP. Downloading it was like trying to eat a turkey with a straw. I have written some useful scripts that aid in keeping the file tree up-to-date and cleaning it of antiquated packages.

What software do you regularly use?

Linux, KDE, Konqueror, Bash, Pidgin, EMACS, Eclipse, WINE, Pidgin, Mplayer, Amarok, Superkaramba, Kmail, Transmission

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?

EMACS, and EMACS

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?

Debian `Sarge' was a pain in the hole.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?

I don't recall. I wouldn't deliberately introduce anyone to a particular distribution. I would gauge their need and pick the distribution that fit them best.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?

I don't really care very much about where the kernel is headed, as much as I would if I were one of the programmers taking it there. It incrementally does its job better over time. I'm more excited about the capabilities of a microkernel, like GNU Hurd. I'd like to see Ubuntu become more about software freedom and user's rights, and I think that is where Shuttleworth is coming from anyway.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?

Free as in freedom, not free as in beer.

Tell as much as you’re willing about your “real” life — name, age, gender, location, family, religion, profession, education, hobbies, etc.

I am Thomas Leeuwen. I am a raw-eating, geeky, social, flirting, lazy, water-drinking, frugal, strategic, hard-working, smart, tired, hypermiling, drunk, naked 25-year old from Norway. I spend too much of my time online, work a dead-end job that I hate, and I make stupid choices in life. I have a father I refuse to speak to, a mother who supports me, two great sisters with whom I am very close and I just lost my girlfriend because I cheated on her. My job is going nowhere, and I don't want it to. Oh and there is a big chance I'm the guy sleeping with your girlfriend.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?

My parents gave me a computer in '94, and man did i NOT want it. Interrest slowly came to be. Became interrested in linux in '99, but didnt stick with it due to lack of time and Red Hat cli being very scary.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?

Right now only Mint on this computer. A few running in vmware.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?

I also have an old laptop with ubuntu server and openbox installed.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?

Probably the day after.

Do you help others? Do others help you?

I do, and they do.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?

No, should I be?

What distros do you regularly use?

I regularly use Ubuntu and RH.

What software do you regularly use?

Bluefish, Gimp, Opera, Mumbles, Blueproximity, Amarok.

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?

I have two: BlueProximty and Opera. Least favorite is MintUpdate because the damn icon is annoying.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?

Tried the vista beta.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?

Probably 3-5 people.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?

I'd like it to be more unified so development would go faster. The only thing I miss in Linux today is mobile sync.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?

Don't panic.

Tell as much as you’re willing about your “real” life — name, age, gender, location, family, religion, profession, education, hobbies, etc.
My name's Mauro, I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina, but I currently live in California, USA; I moved here almost seven years ago. I am an atheist. I currently attend High School, I'm a senior, and I'm working hard to get through it ( messed around way too much on my freshman year :P ), I plan on going to college to study some short career, haven't made up my mind on which yet. My hobbies are computers, getting together with friends to play cards, talk, just chill, and also playing Football ( Soccer ) and Volleyball.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
When I lived in Argentina I always wanted a computer, we all did, but we couldn't afford one. When I moved to the U.S my dad. who had come one year before I did, had already bought me my first PC. I fell in love with it lol I did not speak any English at all, and I was too shy to try to socialize with English speaking kids, so, until school started, I would spend my days on the internet and playing Delta Force :P

As for GNU/Linux, I somehow ended up watching a Compiz Fusion video. At the time I had just gotten my new PC, and it had Vista by default. I didn't like it at all... and since I was looking for an alternative, I guessed it would be a good idea to try Ubuntu, which seemed to be the most popular distribution, before installing Win XP, and so I did :) At first I was really lost, but thanks to the help of some Linux users, specially Waappu, I got the hang of it and I just loved it :P I also managed to get the two games I played back then working, and so I was happy, and still am :P

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
Not ATM, but I'm considering doing so. One of the things I had to give up when I switch to Ubuntu was War Rock, a FPS game. The game runs good, but Punk Buster, its protection program, doesn't. It just won't update and so it will kick me out of the game :(

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
My sister's PC used to have it, but then I would have to go downstairs everyday to explain to her and my parents how to work it out, I guess they were just too used to Windows, 'cause after a month they decided to switch back to it.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
I used Ubuntu for a couple of days before joining the forum. I was never really active though, since I just had questions, and no knowledge, so all I did was reading.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
Yep, I try to, others do help me, very much.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
Don't think so :P

What distros do you regularly use?
I tried Fedora, SuSe, Kubuntu, and Ubuntu. I stick to Ubuntu now.

What software do you regularly use?
Amarok, K3B, emesene, Gajim, CheckGmail, aMule, Azureus, Photoshop, OpenOffice.org.

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
Amarok is my favorite, I like music, and Amarok is just the best organized player I have ever seen! My least favorite would be Gimp, but I guess that's because I'm used to Photoshop, it's hard to change to Gimp when you're already used to Photoshop.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
Compiz Fusion video lol

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
Some friends. The only one who stuck to it was Daniel, since he doesn't have time to game anymore. The rest, one of them quited after realizing he couldn't play War Rock on it ( he's addicted to that game lol ), and the other said Windows was easier for him.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
I would like to see more gaming integration! We just can't deny Windows native games are better, no offense, but that's the truth :P I guess there's really nothing we can do, and that it is really up to those game developers... but well, Wine has been doing a great job, when I first started using Linux I couldn't even get War Rock installed, now the only problem is its anti cheat system, hopefully soon there will be no problems at all =]

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Not to give up on it just because it seems hard at first. It really isn't that hard, it just takes a bit of patience at first.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
I sat down at the first computer at age 9 and havent gotten out of the chair yet pretty much. Tried GNU/Linux around 2001-2002. I became interested in GNU/Linux because I was sick and tired of the computer telling me what I can and cannot do or learn.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
Nope, 100% Ubuntu on my main desktop since i have other computers to run other stuff on if I want. Dual boot is for people that cant make up their minds :D

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
3! desktop, laptop and server.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
Um, I cant remember but it was fairly straight away.

Do you help others? Do others help you?
I try. Others help me quite a lot.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
I do not belive in registers.

What distros do you regularly use?
Ubuntu, sometimes I play around with Debian.

What software do you regularly use?
Firefox, gnome-terminal, pidgin, amsn, exaile, nautilus

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
My fav is the terminal and my least fav is Firefox, its such a bloated POS.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
Simplicity, it was the first distro that mostly worked out of the box, and later it has started to work 100% out of the box :)

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
I have tried but most just give me the regular FUD and i have not been able to save anyone.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?

I've had computers around me since I was a kid and always been interested in them (well, as much as a kid can be). As for Linux, my father switched from Windows 95 to SUSE around '98 and it's been part of my environment since then, though It was mostly associated with the innumerable hours he'd spent trying to get it to work.
I myself only tried to set Linux (Ubuntu, actually) up on my own computer last summer, and I was really surprised at how easy it had become.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?

I still keep Windows around because of a stupid MMORPG that won't run in wine, but my main OS is Arch Linux.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?

I only own one computer.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?

I joined 2 hours after finishing the install, when I'd given up on finding how to set up my Broadcom wifi by myself.

Do you help others? Do others help you?

I'm always trying to find problems I'm able to help with, though even most of the Absolute Beginner Talk posts are beyond my level. And I don't reallyhave much patience for trying to understand vague questions.

And these forums have been helping me a lot ever since I started using Ubuntu, I'd probably have given up without this impressive level of support.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?

Nope (what's that? :P).

What distros do you regularly use?

Arch Linux

What software do you regularly use?

SciTE, The GIMP, Opera, Claws-mail, Tilda, Exaile, mplayer.

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?

Favourite: Tilda
Least favourite: Firefox, this thing is just sooooo slow. The moment I could finally go back to Opera because the 9.50 beta had become stable enough was one of the happiest in my life.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?

I'd always been pretty intersted in Linux, but was somehow too lazy to change my habits and try to figure out everything by myself. Then, shortly after I started college an improvised install-fest allowed me to take the step with people telling me where to start.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?

2 or 3 colleagues I think. But then again, Ubuntu runs on most of our department's computers, and our C programming course requires that we work in a Unix environment. So I can't really be sure who introduced what...

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?

I like the fact that Linux as a whole is not headed in any direction at all, but rather each distro goes its own way toward its own goals. So in short, let's keep doing what we're doing now. Yes, nowadays most new users all start with the same distro (Ubuntu), but fortunately the community here is very open-minded about other distributions, thanks to which the growing popularity of Linux does not look like it will endanger its plurality.

As for Ubuntu itself, I'd like to see it finally close the gap between its easy and intuitive GUI tools and their overly complex foundations (because Ubuntu IS one of the hardest distributions to manage by hand, and doesn't offer much help or documentation on that level). But then again, this should not interfere with Ubuntu's pursuit of ease of use for the casual user; since there are so many distributions, it's probably better if each of them sticks to clear and coherent goals.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
- As soon as you boot your new installation, start Synaptic, go under Options->Repositories (or something like that) and unchek the box that says to use the install CD as a package source.
- If you move/resize your partitions in any way, you'll have to completely redo your /etc/fstab file because its default configuration is stupid.

Just kidding.
(or not? Those were the answers to the first two problems encountered by each and every person I helped switch to Ubuntu)

Easy install with "It just works" ... without Windows' habit of bloat.
Also a basic install version that will let you decide which programs to install with the basic OS and enough functionality to go online and have Os search for and install necessary drivers.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Where to find an"Idiots guide to Linux install." This would include an in depth discussion of partitioning (how many, what to put on them...for Linux only and for Dual boot). Linux equivalents to common Windows programs...with comparison of options.
These would be a good start to help increase the migration to Linux.

I became 'interested' in computers when I got my MacBook in 2006. I had used a computer before that extensively, but wasn't really 'interested' in them. I became interested in Linux as a whole when I was trying distros out in VMWare. I eventually stuck with Ubuntu, which I later installed.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?

When I was 8 and my aunt bought an old Packard Bell and it had THE INTERNET on it. Oh Mosaic. What a browser. Linux has interested me in as long as I've known about it, because it was free and had some "geek cred". Ubuntu I heard of a year ago and started trying because I still had that geek cred, but didn't actually have to learn anything.
:lolflag:

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?

Yep. Well, sort of. I just reformatted, but I usually have OpenSUSE on here and will again, since 10.3 with KDE3.5 is absolute butter. If I could get it to work with my University connection I'd use it right now.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?

Nope.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum? Negative time. I had it on here, but never used it. After reading around, THEN I started actually using it.

Do you help others? Do others help you?

I try to, and absolutely. My "help" comes in the form of pointing people in the right direction on fairly basic things, wherein I find people seeking help on a problem I had and giving them the advice I got.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?

I don't even know what that means, so no.

What distros do you regularly use?

Again, Ubuntu and OpenSUSE.

What software do you regularly use?

Yikes, um... Opera, Swiftweasel, Banshee, Picard, Conky, Compiz, AWN, Emerald, GIMP, Pidgin, deluge, Wine, Automatix...

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?

Favorite? Probably Banshee or Compiz. Least? Well that depends. If you mean my least favorite of what I use, probably GIMP, because I dislike the interface. Overall? C'mon, there's hundreds of apps I can't stand.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?

Simplicity and the forum. I can use it easily without knowing the nuts and bolts of Linux, and there's a huge community to help me when I try to get into said nuts and bolts and invariably break something. Plus, the configurability has left it BEAUTIFUL.

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?

Sure. A few. None have stuck yet. I don't really hang out with computer-oriented people (believe it or not off the computer I'm what most would call a "jock party guy")

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?

Spread, get support from the gaming devs. Ubuntu I'd like to see go on a two-layer development cycle where one major release happens every year, and one minor that's not so much a full upgrade as a half-upgrade previewing what's coming in the major one. It feels like by the time one release has all the kinks out of it, the next one's almost ready.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?

Stick with it. It seems ugly and disorienting at first, but within a week or so you won't want to go back. You really do have to sit down and say "okay, for the next week I'm not going to use my Windows partition unless I literally cannot accomplish this task without it." Once you do that, you'll understand.

Aside from fully operable ATI drivers, I'm pretty happy. Maybe some more 64 bit support, but that's more to do with third party applications such as Eclipse than Ubuntu.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
Congratulations. Now you can use your computer as it was intended!

Tell as much as you’re willing about your “real” life — name, age, gender, location, family, religion, profession, education, hobbies, etc.
My name is Tommy Brunn, and I'm a young lad from the cold forests of northern Sweden (no, not Switzerland!). I currently live on my own in a city called Sundsvall. I'm in my last year of the Swedish equivalent of high school, at an international social science program.

When and how did you become interested in computers? in Linux? in Ubuntu?
I'm not sure really. I've always enjoyed using computers, but it wasn't until I was 11 or so that I really started to become interested in them. As most people, I was brought up with Windows, and barely knew that there were alternatives until I was 14 or so. Still, it took me several years before I had the courage to take Linux for a spin. I'm 17 now, and I started using Linux about a year ago. Ubuntu was my first distribution, and it's still my primary OS. I do however enjoy playing around with other distributions, but I've found that Ubuntu just works, which is what I need from my main OS.

Do you use more that one operating system on your computer? If so, how many? and what are they?
I use Linux and Windows. I mainly keep Windows on there for Photoshop and games.

Do you use more that one computer with Ubuntu? If so, How many?
Nope. I only have one computer. However, I've been thinking about getting a laptop, and in that case I will make my desktop windows only, and my laptop Linux only.

How long after using Ubuntu before you join the forum?
A day or two? :P

Do you help others? Do others help you?
I help others when I can. Sadly it's not all that often. Other people have helped me a lot though.

Are you a Linux Registered member? Are you an Ubuntu Registered member?
Yes and yes.

What distros do you regularly use?
Only Ubuntu. But I'm constantly playing around with other distributions.

What software do you regularly use?
Firefox, Songbird, Pidgin, VLC, Gnome, Compiz, Bluefish, and a lot of other programs.

What’s your favorite application? And what is Your least favorite?
My favorite would probably be Pidgin. I like it way better than Windows Live Messenger. My least favorite is definitely Enlightenment.

What made you start using Ubuntu Linux?
Windows!

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
I've introduced plenty of people, but I haven't converted anybody. Basically everyone who I think might be able to learn Linux are gamers. I also know a lot of people who don't play games at all, whom I think Linux would be perfect for, but they're just too stupid to learn something new. I don't want to have to act as a hotline whenever they can't figure out why they can't run an .exe file.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
I would love to see it grow to the point where hardware vendors started writing drivers for it.

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
"No, mounted harddrives don't go in /mnt, they go in /media..."

When i first met a computer, in kindergarten, i still couldn't say the word. I got interested in Linux about 1,5 years ago. Before that i hated Linux in the gut. :lolflag:

Peer pressure. o_O My friends were doing it, so i jumped on the Ubuntu bandwagon... only i stayed!

Have you ever introduced others to Ubuntu? And if so, how many?
Made my dad install it. Tried to spark interest in a friend, but he is an oblivious Mac fanboy.

What would you like to see happen with Linux in the future? with Ubuntu?
Listen to the people, hear what they want improved and HOW!

If there was one thing you could tell all new Ubuntu users, what would it be?
When booting into Ubuntu, forget everything you "learned" about computers with Windows. Then it will be amazing!
