Which member of this forum thinks they can claim, by virtue of their location, to be the first to celebrate the new year. I'm in New York so I am out, but being a global community, there should be someone confident enough to claim the distinction..

Seeing as I am on the Greenwich meridian, technically, you guys CAN'T start celebrating till after 12:00am here :D

LOL, that's a good point, though what about UTC, hasn't that replaced GMT?

Or are they both the same thing?

Not really. it depends if you live to the east or the west. Greenwich is where the are relative to but that doesn't mean the new year doesn't start till then, its starts at different times in different places. Also is this western new year or Chinese since they are pretty far apart. Is this going by the Julian or Gregorian calender.

Whatever the hebrew calendar is (can't remember the name off the top of my head) I think they're due to be celebrating 5562 or something soon :p

They are the same thing, UTC is the better term, as people hate the British.

Alright, edited.

I was in Helmsdale once, it was for the eclipse up there, so I was knackered.

The British hate each other as well then.

We get free university education by the way. (for 3 years)

Hello +13 GMT (Day Light Savings) :D

New Zealand sees the sun first each day. I live in Auckland though. IIRC parts of Fiji and the Chatam Islands a fractions of a minute ahead of Auckland as well as other parts of Mainland New Zealand.

I think there is a small little Island nation that uses +13.5 or +14. There might not be any Linux users there though.

I think I can safely say that I will be one of the first ones celebrating the New Year's celebration. Here on the east coast of the U.S. (GMT -5) I'll be kicking off the celebration at 1200hrs 28 DEC when we go on our long weekend :D

I know that's not what you mean, but...
