I was just searching the internet for a solution for my wireless problems when I stumbled upon the wifix project (in the ubuntu forums archive from a couple of months ago). I had a look around but I couldn't find any mention of it anywhere - is this project still going?

edit: Opps! Sorry, submitted this to totally the wrong part of the forum - Should probably be moved to wireless and networking or programming or something.

Some of us want to restart the Wifix project and maybe even find a way to incorporate the information gathered about working wifi combinations into Jockey (AKA 'Hardware Drivers') so that people would be liberated from the awful experience that wifi installation issues can be now. Please reply to this thread if you're interested.

The original project made an effort to 'crowd source' -- gather wireless configuration data (http://web.archive.org/web/20071012174139/ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=547444) from user's who's systems are working. An excellent, excellent idea, and I'm thinking we could continue and expand this.

The client is written in python. It has a database (currently hosted at sourceforge) which (if i'm remembering correctly) is in Postgres. I've thought it might be interesting to move to something simpler to work with like CouchDB that could be sitting on UbuntuOne or someplace else that is easy to access.

Here's the current project web site, such as it is.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/wifix/

I started a launchpad project: https://launchpad.net/wifix

Here are some of the old links. I haven't been able to find a working version of the original development thread.

Naming the project (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=547740)

Support the Ubuntu Wifix Project (http://ubuntulinuxhelp.com/support-the-ubuntu-wifix-project/)

Help create a program to automatically install wireless drivers on Linux (http://digg.com/linux_unix/Help_create_a_program_to_automatically_install_wir eless_drivers_on_Linux)

In the last post PreviousN describes the use of Wifix (http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-713688.html)

Some of Blake Martin's other good work on wireless (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:5AR1pBAyHaMJ:ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php%3Ft%3D405990%26page%3D25+bmartin+si te:ubuntuforums.org&cd=13&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a)

Yes, the original project's sourceforge page is: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wifix/

But we're moving to LaunchPad. Our LP project page is: https://launchpad.net/wifix

The LaunchPad team working on the project is called 'Wifixers' and our page is
https://launchpad.net/~wifixers. Please come join us.

Now we've added a fourth Wifixer team member, km0r3 who'll help us out with development, and be our release engineer for our first release which will be at the end of August. Plus tenach is helping us behind the scenes with web site and db support.

In more recent (as in today) news, Broadcomm just opened sourced all their network card drivers. Wasn't one of the biggest issues with wireless dealing with broadcomm chipsets?
