I'm not sure if anyone already mentioned this, but in the new issue of Linux Format magazine (a UK magazine), there is a write up about Ubuntu!!! They not only mention the distro, but give a full two page review with screenshots. They gave it an 8/10. Though, I do think they're particular to KDE, so that would do it. Anyhow, I was really excited to see it and if anyone's been to gnome-look.org lately, there's so much ubuntu stuff on there. Here we go...I feel the wave coming on. :) Way to go to everyone involved!

Yeah, they are big KDE junkies. That alone explains their 8/10.

OT: I would buy their magazine more if I could do so without paying 15 dollars due to the fact that they include two cd's or one dvd full of crap I don't need.

I hear ya. I forked it out due to it covering a lot of things that I've been wanting to read about and my boss is thinking of making the move from windows/asp to linux/php, this months issue had an article about the advantages of the new php.

The one statement that they made which I thought was funny about Ubuntu was that it's "a distro for more seasoned linux users" and "not so much for new users to linux". I found this funny because I'm new to linux and Ubuntu has been the one that has made the most sense to me and it has felt like I've really been a part of it here at the forum and have learned more than a 4 cd distro of redhat was teaching me.

Ubuntu rocks.

Yes, the version of Dapper they're giving away on the cover disk is some horribly bastardized version that gives a GNOME desktop, with KDE apps installed and bits of Xubuntu too. They should just let the user choose - its taking me a while to remove the crap I don't want

It's actually Ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop all in one. If you log out you can choose to log in with any desktop.

It's pretty good, I like it! I got to see what Kubuntu and Xubuntu are really like.

Can't you just delete the two desktop metapackages you don't want with aptitude?

Don't know about that, I post at their forum and a lot of their writers are there. I know a few tend to prefer things like TechWM and such.

I don't think they have any preference for DE and they give GNOME 2.14 a very big score. Lets be fair they gave Ubuntu 8 pages in LXF 83 and regularly praise it and it was distro of the year in their annual awards.

In fact the magazine tends to give quite a balanced view of OSS in general I find with regular articles on smaller distros and non Linux free OSes. I see OpenSolaris, *BSD, Syllable, ReactOS etc quite regularly so why would they pick one DE over another.

Now I've finished my advertising I'll let you get on with the thread ;).

The comments at the beginning of this post are now a year and a half old!

And interestingly it's all come around again. For in LF83 they've given Ubuntu Dapper 9/10, and devoted a total of 12 pages to it!

And I too like the magazine for it's balanced approach to all distros and DE's

Yeah, I riffled through the mag at WHSmith. They have also a two-page interview with Shuttleworth. Even later in the pages they have a special howto about Ubuntu for children; how you can transform Ubuntu to make it more suitable for children.

LF is a great mag.
