the latest version of pidgin in source is 2.2.1
it seems to take more than 3 months to add 2.3.1 in the source, ohhhhhh...
terrible......
i really don't want to compile

Never, I think.
Only security updates are added to the repo of each release. This ensures stability. (Someone correct me if I am wrong)

You can install the .deb package here:http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=Pidgin
Its the 2.3.0 version though and i haven't tested it...:)

some new versions do have security updates along with bug fixes!
