I got an idea for a hardware device

I have an idea. I have a piece of hardware I would like to create along with the software that would make use of this hardware.

How can I get my idea rolling and make a prototype?

I don't how though so I won't be much help.

I am not a computer engineer :( I think thats what field the hardware part would apply to, correct?

What is it you want to do, I have a electronic engineering background, not that I build much ;)
