Heh I don't think that'll be the case.
And I'd like this in Canada too ;)

Still not good enough.
They need to offer Ubuntu on ever last model, and for at least $50 less than the base cost.

Lol, I know, but I thought I ought to make people aware that it's getting better :) Although I have to agree they are offering it on some shoddy PC's...well...they'd run Ubuntu fine, but a lot of people still want the latest hardware.
At least it's on the main page now though. And they are a bit cheaper, but that might be the hardware :(

For MOST users getting anything above the base configs is a waste of money.
You pay 4 times the price to get at most 15% performance increase over a low-end config.
Other than people who are heavy gamers , or in some graphics intensive business I tell those that think they have to spend $1000 or more for a system so it will " last them a while " to buy the $399 model and throw it away and buy a new $399 model every year. They will be better off in only one year than the $1000 or more system they were going to buy.

True, I've only just gone dual-core, and they've been around for a while now.
I tend to wait for the price drops :p

The ones that get me are the RAM upgrades or video card upgrades that cost more to add on than buying that much memory or the same model of graphics card new, let alone more than the difference in price between the old and the upgraded component.

Agreed , but I am asked by several small business's to assist them in purchasing.
I will almost always steer them towards a base system and then do the memory upgrade from whatever store has the best sale on memory that week and then find a good deal on video cards and upgrade that for them in about 10 minutes.
If you add up the cost AND you shop the sales you can get an oem system for much cheaper than just the cost of the parts of a custom system AND you save all your build time.

Do the OEM power supplies hold up well? I talked to a dell rep once and he told me their cheap desktop that I was looking at had a 280 watt psu. Made me nervous about buying one if I were planning on putting a video card and other expansion cards in it.

I'm still disappointed.
On dell.com it doesn not show the same thing. There only an "open-source PCs" link towards the bottom. Why is that option only on the euro site?

There are driver issues they haven't worked out, so it's explainable.

Never had a problem with them.
Got a base system with a dual core x2 in it , upgraded to an 8800 card and 2gb of ram.

Like me, they must think it is more stable than 7.10. Just a guess though.
It is a step in the right direction. Good to see. Even though it is not an option on every computer build it is at least moving the right way.
It is by small and simple things that the great things will happen. Little moves and little people add up. Which is why Dell is even offering Linux.

People are mentioning how it isn't on every computer, but I doubt it ever will be...I think the highest system Dell will offer it on will be the top mid range systems.
The only reason being that game developers still don't do Linux games, and that's what dell's performance range is for - gaming.
Still always nice to see little improvements :)

Can't remember where, but I read some place that they'll be switching shortly after the first of the year, though IMO, If I were them, I'd wait to install the new LTS version.
As I was using a rubber mallet to boot my old computer, I couldn't wait for 7.10 to be installed before I bought a new box. However, as soon as I received the Inspiron 530N, Gutsy had just gone final, and the first thing I did when I booted up the new machine, was install it. I just wanted the box. It didn't matter what it came with. If anyone's on the fence waiting for them to factory install 7.10, just buy it.
Edit:
It is nice, that it's listed in the general menu now. You had to hunt and peck to find it before. I'm sure many more potential users will see it, and think about the switch to Linux.

Glad to see they're making an effort to improve consumer awareness about other OSes out there. Still room for improvement though, they could off having "Dell recommends Windows Vista" on every single page for instance. Regardless, it's more effort than most other OEMS put forth. Cheers to Dell and many more Dell-Buntus. =]
