This is a new website I have put together with some help from Jacob on the CafeLinux.org Team.

While apt:foo is specifically made for OzOs users, anybody that uses a Debian/Ubuntu derivative can use it.

This is a direct inspiration from my threads here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=617995

&

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=570975&highlight=sudo+web+project

There are a couple of things that need to be done beyond the obvious...

1. expand upon the list of apt:foo's
2. put in info links
3. distinguish between repos and debs

of course the whole website has to get cleaned up a developed that will come soon...

Take a look if there are any apt:foo's you would like to see added please let me know here or in the apt:get thread.

apt:foo (http://cafelinux.org/OzOs/node/3)
http://cafelinux.org/OzOs/node/3

all apt:foo's will be tested and only addded by admins for your apt:foo enjoyment.

;)

The Website has been updated, Thanks be to ThinkBuntu and Jacob(jacobmp92) (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=90021) for their help and suggestions.

I still would like some feedback.

Still need to be done:

1. Menu system needs overhaul, ie. Drupal Pages and Bookpages need to be implemented.

2. apt:foos need to be expanded.

3. Separate Menus for 64bit & 32bit need to be made.

4. Still need to distinguish between repos and debs.

5. Perhaps implement a rating system? perhaps not?

Any suggestions in presentation or other would be greatly appreciated.

What's special about this? Isn't it just a page with a few apturls to apps already in the repositories, and one link being a deb on an ftp site?

What's special about this? Isn't it just a page with a few apturls to apps already in the repositories, and one link being a deb on an ftp site? This is an excellent question!

No need to reinvent the wheel...

What's nice about it is simplicity, it uses existing tried and true systems as you pointed out apturls which are in the repositories and deb files.

These are further tested and approved by the CafeLinux.org Admins, so you could say a final inspection makes them different from just being a page of apturls and debs. These carry the CafeLinux.org seal of approval. While these are specifically approved for Oz OS any Debian based OS can use them that have "At the very minimum...Firefox, apt-get, apturl, gdebi, and your happiness."

This comes in a nice simple presentation, from a trusted source. For experienced Linux users it is repetitive, for new users to Oz OS or other Debian based distros(including Ubuntu) it means downloads are just a click away.

The technology is basic and tried and true, the presentation is key, based in simplicity.

I should also point out that there is an apt:foo forum for further discussion(continued post are always welcomed here also):

http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/board,95.0.html

Also apt:foo can work in Opera and Firefox 3, to see how refer to Rui Pais' HowTo here:

http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,972.0.html

I hope some find this helpful and also like the presentation and simplicity.

...again as listed much improvement is needed and will come.

I don't think I'm ever going to forget the time mac and I had to teach you what 'foo' meant. . .:lolflag:

Me neither! Classic memory. (main inspiration why I choose the name apt:foo)

Took place: at the second DC UUG(Ubuntu User Group) meeting at the Davenport Cafe on the American University campus.

Good Times and Good Memories.

I've come along way baby!

Brunellus, both Leah and I miss you & Mac and our DC UUG meet-ups, combined with good food, good drinks and good friendships.

You know what? This would be useful if you had a small review/description of each app, a link to the projects homepage and a screen shot if it's a gui program. A link to a small guide on how to use the programs too would be nice. If you did that, it would be an incredibly good project, especially for newer users (like those who suffer from the why can't i just download an .exe file?) I doubt drupal is the right thing for this and I'm gonna think about this and create something like this if you don't.

A friend and I have spent a long time writing a rather specialized but hacky download/catalogue system in php for a site we run and I'm sure it could be modified for this purpose.

All this is exactly what we are already working on incorporating...

I am putting a apt:foo team together now, if you would like to join and help please email me directly:
