The first number in the version is the last digit of the year. The number after the point . is the month.
So Gutsy is 7.10, released in October 10 of 2007 = 7.10

Isn't it (using Gutsy 7.10 as the example)
7 = year (2007)
10 = month (october)
As I'm sure Gutsy was released in late October :)
