Anyone know of a free network audit tool? My goal is to scan my network to catalog all of the desktops and the software installed on each.
I know several large CRM packages like Heat andTrack-IT! have audit tools, as does Novells Zenworks, but since I have neither, I'm looking elsewhere. It has to be either free, or GNU, as I have both a XP and linux laptop.
Thanks!

Did you ever get any response to this question?

Not really.
I've tried playing around with Winventory
http://winventory.sourceforge.net/
but haven't been able to get it fully running. Seems like the audit script runs, but nothing ever gets shoved into the mysql database. It's also in a pre-release, so I'm holding out for the final.

Have a look at Open-AudIT (I think it's the successor to Winventory). If you're interested in network and service monitoring, Zabbix is pretty great.
