The defaults for some of the programs I have, like Lyx, are just awful. I want to spruce them up a bit. Any ideas? I've tried Googling, but no luck, I'm afraid.

there are tons of icon themes out there - look on gnome-look.org
Ubuntu also comes with a few, but they are not as good as the default Human. I would recommend having a look at my black theme (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/%22My%22+Dark+Theme?content=66005) just for the icons (which are not mine ;))

http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/index.php?sort=date (Mainly Mac and Windows icons, however they can be used for linux - after all, a png is a png no matter what OS.

Deviant is an excellent place to shop.

You can get some more icons from the gnome-extra-icons package in Ubuntu's repository.
