I found this funny/alarming...

Alarming because someone actually thought this was leopard...I'm going to rethink my theme....

I usually upload all my pics to flickr in order to post on the AWN forums, when for the first time someone left me a comment...

I was kind of surprised, both by someone leaving one, and the comment itself.

Oh how misguided he was. ;)

Yup, the untrained eye really can't tell the difference :p.

Which is exactly how trademark laws work. When you are so similar that normal customers can't tell the difference, you're violating trademark laws. Of course, we're not dealing with trademarks here, but there may be something else.

I had someone think that my ubuntu was a mac even with a decently basic layout. The menu bars were both in their gnome-y ways, it was really just the beryl that fooled them.

About the trademark thing, it doesn't much matter when it's for personal use. For example, I can trick my civic out to look like a high class... something. I don't know a lot about cars. But I have every right to do that. It's when I start selling those Hondas that look like Porches or whatever that gives Porche every right to do stuff to me.

so what app is displaying that tricked out panel on the bottom? and is it resource heavy?

it's Avant Window Navigator. and it's not resource heavy but you must be running compiz/beryl for it to work.
i had this on my old computer AMD 2600+, 1GB , Nvidia 6200 and it worked without a problem

AWN or avant-window-navigator. Oh yah, it's not very resource heavy. It runs just fine on my AMD Sempron 3100+ with 768MB RAM and a NVIDIA 6200

It's a good performer for me, especially using the latest builds. Depends on your PC's performance more than anything, though.

On the theme of dock desktops, here's mine, and It couldn't be any more perfect in my opinion :)

There is one thing that gives it away - the lack of the Mac OS Finder icon on the left hand side of the Dock. ;)

Yes but he said "the untrained eye", a user called "Macintosh user" probably isn't untrained in Mac OS X's theme. :)

It also has a wavy highlight in it.

Nice. How did you get the Leopard-style stacking of documents on the dock like that?

I think it's a patch to the stacks applet. It's not in the extras yet though (so you have to patch it yourself).

Very nice. Can't believe that awn got the stacking effect so quickly. Hope it makes it into the ubuntu repos soon.

latest one, and your friend is a bit dumb because that ain't no mac bar... I don't seem to like the stacks effects, they need to be more like leopards. What awn theme are you using, send it to me.

you gotta add the applet, right click then say use experimental gui.

Hey guys,

To answer all the questions...Yes, it is AWN and the stacks applet, along with the experimental GUI, is available for usage. AWN uses minimal resources, very low memory usage and is a lot lighter than most of the docks for linux. :)

I don't know who this guy is and I'm not sure how he found my photos.

The only thing that worries me is copyright law...I mean, Apple's gotta have some kind of copyright on the layout...correct?

I wonder what the developer of the stacks curve thinks of this....

Like I said, I don't use Flickr to publicize my photos, I only use it for uploading onto the AWN forums.

Copyright just means we can't use their code or programs without crediting them, it's patents you're thinking about, but it's a lot harder to patent something (not that they didn't do it, just that it's slightly less likely and they'd have to have it reviewed)
