Just been looking into iPhone alternatives on my blog. Not because I'm wholly against the iPhone, as I said in the post it's a nice little device, but the price tag and imperfections put me off.

Anyway, I thought it interesting how much of an effect it'd had on the cellphone market, prompting a competing device from nearly everyone.

Does anyone have the iPhone? Or a competitor's device? I tried it out for the first time in store the other day, and it feels like £200's worth of equipment, but as I said before the contract limitations and lack of MMS, Video and 3rd party applications would prevent me from buying it.

There are none, yet. The Neo 1973 will be a competitor, but who knows when that'll finally come out. There's also the HTC Touch, but it's a piece of junk. I finally cracked and bought an unlocked iphone. large up front cost, but since I kept my previous phone for 4 years, it's not too bad since it's only a one time cost. i still keep my cheap $29.99 cell plan.

There is no details on internal memory? If they do not bring any, they are not iphone alternatives, just a phone with touch screen- not so great. :(

I recently got a N95, the Iphone is an Ibrick

- No 3g
- Crap camera
- No proper audio jack (I don't want to be forced to use the ipod headphones)
- No 'pedigree' apple are new to the phone business and I doubt its going to be perfect first time by a long shot
- No Gps
- VERY expensive to buy
- VERY expensive and restrictive contract
- Lack of 3rd party apps support

For my needs I would rather have a phone that works well, is reliable, has a good enough camera for those odd moments when im not carrying my proper digicam, 3G so I can get fast access to the net and a standard socket for headphones (that comes with TV out leads)

If you really want touch screen then get the LG but don't waste money on this "brand toy" its only good feature is its browser but with its lack of 3G you have to be near a friendly wireless point to use it properly....so pretty pointless IMHO

My 2 cents on this I-hype :)

The Samsung F700 is out in Germany. Search for Vodafone Qbowl. It only has an 3.2 Megapixel camera. And it was not announced recently. Rather it was announced sometimes in January or February.

As for the iPhone or the the LG KU990. Was in an electronics store the other day. They had both phones there. From the specs I prefer the LG, but the iPhone feels lighter when you hold it and the touchscreen seems to work a notch more seemless on the iPhone. Besides that on using camera and even more video LG wins hands down. And that added with the "please hand us over all your money" type of contracts you have to get with the iPhones makes me go for the LG.

And besides that I wouldn't buy an iPhone now anyways. Was the same with iPods at first. The first generations were quite expensive and still had some problems. But within 1 - 2 years the prices dropped and the devices got most of what they have now implemented. Im kinda expecting the same for the iPhone. So we should have a cheaper iPhone with most of the currently missing features in 1-2 years.

The SDK will arrive, for iPhone and iPod touch (!), in February 2008 after MacWorld San Francisco. Apple "[is] excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users,"

Im in the same predicament. I would also like to use my own headphones without adapter. I would also prefer drag and drop for my music. Not too bothered about camera and wi-fi to be honest. Just a decent phone with decent music capabilities where i can use my own headphones.

Not sure about the phone part, but I know the Nokia n800 does pretty much everything but the phone part. (technically it has skype but that requires a Wifi point).

I was thinking about getting one, and using it along with my current cell phone.
