View Full Version : Stores that sell Ubuntu-powered PCs

Are there stores in the Philippines that sell desktops and laptops pre-installed with Ubuntu? Meron kasi akong nakitang laptops on sale that run on Knoppix/KDE (sa Octagon ata yun). The thing is, kung pre-installed yung Ubuntu sa PC, mas konti yung risk on compatibility, tapos it would have been cheaper, right? Note: Walmart in the US sells Ubuntu-powered PCs for $199, or roughly P9,000.

But then, I could be wrong.

Open Source College teaches students Linux. From installation to Administration.

We can sum up two things that would help ensure the sustainability of Ubuntu--and Linux and FOSS--in the country, and that is 1) capacity building; and 2) "networking".

The first would mean investment in education (both formal and non-formal), research (e.g. in software development and IT management), and policy making (designing the regulatory framework for the use of FOSS).

And the second, establishing linkages between schools, industries, people and yes, the government for information exchange and collaboration. And while at it, maybe we can have a database/directory of schools offering courses on FOSS, organizations and agencies that use Linux, stores that sell Linux-powered PCs, and IT people who are proficient/certified in FOSS. This is so people can have an idea whom to proceed for their FOSS needs.

We have done our share in capacity building and networking through this forum but there is plenty of work to be done offline. Let us strive hard to involve the public in this IT revolution.

Don't know if it will work d2, but I hope so, para dumami naman ang options ng consumers.

I agree. Could this be started? I for one am the sole Ubuntu user in the company that I'm working in. I have always suggested Ubuntu and FOSS apps to the IT department. Having no Philippine website/database will surely show people, especially corporations that FOSS are just for hobbyists.

I am using Ubuntu and FOSS for technical stuff in finance, and business presentations, and am able to save a lot for doing so. I could easily write a case study if needed.

The proposed website/database will serve as a launchpad for companies in our country who are considering the idea of using FOSS. The all-in approach (hardware, software, support (IT consultants), training (courses)) is much needed. Just type "linux philippines" in Google and you'll know what I mean.

Last monday ( 12/3/07 ) I went to Micro Valley at festival mall alabang to buy a RAM for my laptop so I can try out linux games :) They do sell laptops (ACER) with some kind of text based linux I forgot the name and its 10,000 pesos cheaper than the one with windows . I told them that they should install ubuntu on them and I showed my xubuntu and fluxbuntu setup. :)

I agree with you, as for schools offering FOSS we do have it and it is positive.ph (http://positive.ph/) they are creating curriculum based on FOSS and they do have schools using their curriculum. as for the proficiency/certification of IT personnel this is too expensive that is why IT personnel are more comfortable of self study because of the high cost of training.

edsamail < free cd, <free dialup e-mail
ragnarok < free cd. <free online game
ubuntu < free cd < free OS

Well kailangan lang siguro talaga ng sponsor para mag produce ng cd for distribution also proper advertisements like banners and posters. well medyo mahirap ata yun lalo na pag walang proper funding ang group. magkaroon kaya tayo ng fund raising activity? but first of all why don't we have an election of officers para mag maintain ng group? something like officers per region or city. para pag may mga activities madaling ma organize. what do you think guys?
