So I remember reading specs on Launchpad that had to do with ubuntu-mobile but then never heard anything after the 7.10 release. What's the current status of Ubuntu on a cell phone and when can I expect to be able to buy a FOSS cell phone (specifically with Ubuntu)?

I'm also very intrested in this. Any information or status would be mega helpful.

Also, if the "Ubuntu Phone" is a ways off does anyone have any recomendation on another Linux based phone?

I'm keen to upgrade my cell phone soon(ish) and I'd love to have a phone that works with me instead of against me (e.g. good file transfer features, etc...).

im very interested in Android.

Android is an open source mobile phone platform based on the Linux operating system and developed by the Open Handset Alliance.

Ubuntu mobile is not aimed at cell phones, but rather at mobile internet devices. It is under heavy development and the first release will be at the same time as ubuntu 8.04. For more information see here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded

Essentially UMAE is a way to get Intel to sell more memory chips (I don't know if they do), as it uses Gecko and OO.o.

the last i heard was this (http://techiqmag.com/2007/06/19/five-ways-intel-will-weaken-microsoft/).

4. More mobile device competition: Intel also is working with Ubuntu on a mobile/embedded version of Linux for Internet devices and smart phones (http://allaboutubuntu.wordpress.com/2007/05/16/intel-jumps-aboard-ubuntu-bandwagon/). Preliminary code should ship this fall, with Intel-based mobile devices running Ubuntu arriving in early 2008.
