phone headset

I have a headset the is originally from a phone. It has a really small plug on the end that would not fit into a computer jack. Can i switch the plug for a bigger one and expect the mic to work? All I want is the microphone, not the speaker. Although I could make two jacks on the end and plug on into the sound out.

Any advice?
