So, I have a ThinkPad T40, with a factory 40GB harddrive. The drive has been getting on my nerves lately - whenever its doing a lot of activity (like when installing a package with gdebi), it freezes my ubuntu up. Literally - my mouse slows to a crawl and isn't very responsive, applications take forever to do things. In short, hell for someone needs a *fast* OS.

Plus the drive is getting somewhat full - so in short, I'm thinking of buying a new harddrive.

I'm completely inept in these things though - as I understand, they're completely BIOS dependant, so the OS doesn't matter to them. Other than that, can anyone show me some pointers on getting a good deal / how should I go about buying a new one?

Thank you!

Edit: Argh! The title should say 'harddrive'. With all these driver issues about, that's all I can think of :(

Well these days its kind of hard to go wrong with a hard drive.

Seagate and Western Digital are my top picks for reliable brands.

I would get it from newegg though...

Just to make sure I got it right. Will a

"HITACHI HITACHI 80 GIGABYTE PATA DESKTOP STORAGE 7200 RPM 8MB CACHE BARE DRIVE"

fit into my laptop? It's here (click (http://www.1click2computers.com/product_details/detail.asp?prod_id=0Y30001))

That drive will NOT work, it is a 3.5" desktop drive.

You need a 2.5" laptop drive. Hard disk type: ATA-100 (Enhanced IDE)

The best laptop drives available are made by Hitachi, the Travelstar series. This is the opinion of two data recovery companies I dealt with.

Have a look at the above.

Also note that hard drives come in different speeds, 4200rpm, 5400rpm & 7200rpm. Get a 7200rpm as they make a big difference in speed which is very noticeable.

That store you listed does not have a very wide selection of 2.5" hitachi drives, do you have any other online stores in Canada we could look at.

Newegg does not ship outside the USA, APO/FPO. If they did we would all be buying from them.

I look at the 1 click store, but I also plan on buying with paypal - and outside of us & paypal is a deadly combination. Plus I didn't feel like promoting a microsoft certified store, heh.

And thanks for the movie, man! That'll definitely be useful.
