I am therefore now officially a geek.
Long have I been a Linux enthusiast, a technically minded person who can rebuild a PC, but only now have I finally completed the rite of passage that transforms me from n00b who is knowledgeable to fully fledged GEEK.:-({|=
Ladles and Jellyspoons, it is with great pleasure that I announce that at about 11:40pm GMT, Tuesday 20th November 2007 that I, Daniel Davies of (Address removed by perhaps over-sensitive moderation), West Yorkshire successfully overclocked an AMD K6-2 550MHz Super Socket 7 CPU in an MSI MS-5182 motherboard with the latest BIOS revision to... 600MHz!

Thankyoh.

I don't know, haven't actually installed an OS on the machine yet. Tomorrow I plan to attempt to install either Ubuntu or Xubuntu on it. This particular computer is one I am building from spare parts, to donate to Mytholmroyd's recently refurbished Church Hall.:) More on that as it comes...

In my case,it was a motherboard warming tale.
(New MB arrived today.)

Well, I tried Ubuntu and Xubuntu, neither will get past a Kernel Panic unless I reset it to normal frequency. I've tried 6x100MHz @ 2.3v and @ 2.4v, Neither will load.
But 5.5x100MHz (original works OK, so I just hope it won't need that extra 50MHz...:-({|=

50MHz jump? Give it more juice!

My Q6600 (2.4 stock) is running at 3.6GHz (3.6GHz * 4 = 14.4GHz!)

You might want to look through some old posts at www.ocforums.com , it is a GREAT place to get info on overclocking.

Usually, your RAM is unable to go much faster than stock. The motherboard will probably be able to slow the RAM down relative to the FSB (called a RAM divider). Then you should just be able to OC until the RAM is back at its rated speed.

Just a ThermalRight Ultra120. Idle temps are around 28-30, load is 55. I can safely hit 71*C, so I have some room to work with.
