View Full Version : Whateva Happened To Reliability

i mean, its only been a week since ive starting using UBUNTU, and ive already had to reinstall the OS 4 times for one reason or another (files are corripted, GUI cannot start up, GRUB errors.)

i cant run an OS that will destroy my work every three days! in terms of reliability, this cant even compare to windows (thats bad, REALLY bad).

i might have to get rid of UBUNTU once and for all if it crashes one more time. i hope you fix these reliability issues before you lose a lot of users, maybe including me.

Why not tell us precicely what is the problem instead of just complaining?
The people here are great and will help if they can, but if you don't help them they can't help you.

the thing is: there is no problem

this just happens randomly from time to time..

nothing causes it..

yeah, the people in the forums are really great to me and such..

but i cant have this OS with these problems

I havent seen any issues with crashing or corrupted files at all.

I'd say check the hard drive, to make sure its okay.

Also, are you installing from teh same CD each time ?

most reliable os i've ever used. Although before this i have only used windows. Seems to me that if it is happening while you are using it, perhaps your playing with it toooooo much. Maybe you just need to sloooooooooow down a bit. Take your time it will be there in the morning.. ;-)

to be frank. I am really surprised that you are having reliability issues with ubuntu.. ive tried a lot of distros and this one did stand out. Again, I have mentioned this to many many people in the Begginers forum, try to do a fresh install (fresh download, fresh burn, fresh coffee) with default settings (just with the default hardware...no..external usb drives/hardware) and try it out... if you are having troubles...this is the best place in the web to be.....let us know..this community has pulled off great things with horrible hardware/stability issues....so give it a good try. Please be patient and goodluck.

"files are corripted, GUI cannot start up, GRUB errors"

Is what happens always the same thing? Do you one day turn on your computer and it drops down to a shell? What else happens? Throw us a bone, for cryin out loud!

No, you should not have an OS that unstable. No one I know does. This is certainly not typical of Ubuntu.

Let's get this fixed.

1) are you running breezy? If so, well...too bad. It's presently unstable until release in October.

2) Your hardware may be at fault. before you blame the software, please check what the syslog at /var/log and post your suspicious output.

Okay... But can you be a little more precise?

files are corripted - What files? How did you find them become corrupted? Is this due to an app messing with a file?

GUI cannot start up - what happens? What do you see on the screen? GDM/Xorg is very good about complaining if it can't start. This has only ever happened to me when I have used the development versions.

GRUB errors - Again, more detail would be appreciated. Did GRUB go away? Did entries become messed up in GRUB? Are you expecting to dual boot and you can't?

I mean to mention earlier - I believe that 95% or more of the people on these forums are users. (I could be wrong, however) If you feel you have a bug or an issue, it may be a good idea to submit it to bugzilla, that way the developers (who can do things about your problems) can try to fix this.

Hopefully you are still with us and can help us to help you by giving us more information.

I know that sometimes it can feel like you are banging your head against a brick wall, but to give you an example of something that occoured to me - I once tried to install a version of linux designed to be used as a firewall, and had a kernel panic when the install was about 75% complete. Rather than tell the guys what happened, I gave up and went back to another version. Turns out, my information would have been instrumental in fixing a problem that occoured in a very small amount of installs. Instead, my information was lost and it came back and bit the developers because i wasn't willing to share.

That's what Linux is all about - Especially Ubuntu... SHARING. If you have a problem, share it, because no doubt, someone else is having the same problem and is as frustrated as you...

Sorry this post got a bit long!

Sorry this post got a bit long!

Long, but well worth it - I'd really like to see forum users being granted accounts at the ubuntu bugzilla automatically, and preferably have a little page paraphrasing what you've written here pop up when they first register.

There is so much information flowing through these forums that would be simply invaluable to developers and 90% of it is lost because people don't know to take the 5 minutes required to submit a bug report :(

im not saying its the software or the programs or anything..it just is having problems with me..the only error i can remember is error 18 w/ GRUB..all the other ones were too confusing and long to write down.

thanks for really mobbing this post..it really shows that you people care about the users..and that almost seems like enuff to keep UBUNTU..

An error 18 seems to say to me that you are indeed dual booting - here (http://linuxhelp.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=3&t=6523) is a link where someone is trying to get help and the suggested solution is there.

Try to take the time to write down the errors, as I said it will help in trying to fix the problem.

Good Luck!

did you remember to use sudo? like in "sudo apt-get install supertux"

also it's more helpful if you paste the error here.

Next time you get an error, please just cut and paste the whole output from the console (if you are running the command from the console)

I"ve had similar issues with random crashing in ubuntu but Im fairly certain its due to my bad memory. Memtest86 tells me I have bad ram albeit the DELL utility that came with my system shows no signs of it.. GO FIG but frankly I tend to respect memtest86 more and hope i'm right in that assessment.

..I'd try runnning memtest ( reboot and choose it from the Menu ) and let it run for a hour or two and see if you have any bad ram as that for sure will cause you grief like I believe it has me. Linux uses most all available ram ( all ?) and therefore is most likely to show failure before windows does. Someone correct me if I"m mistaken.

cheers

To the original post-er: please don't assume just because you're having problems that everyone else is. I've never experienced a Ubuntu "reliability" problem and neither have a lot of other users here. If you need specific help, ask for it, and people will be more than willing to help.

funny, ive been running ubuntu for months without incident. why should you be so lucky? im really tired of threads like this, its rediculous. have you ever thought your hardware might be at fault? believe it or not, a bad power supply can cause the (limited) symptoms you describe

For the original poster:
It does sound like you are having some problems. I also think they are able to be solved. However, more information is needed if that is going to happen. May I politely suggest you read the links in my signature, take a deep breath, and then return with a new post, maybe even a new thread with a good, descriptive title. Outline the problems as precisely and clearly as you are able with a generous helping of gratitude. Do this and I think your problems are likely to be easily diagnosed and fixed quickly.

ConnerP, for the record I'm not mad at you and I never was. You are already an impressive 12 year old for tackling this yourself. Congrats! Please don't feel like anyone here was trying to give you a spanking or anything. In reality we all genuinely want to help you learn and grow in knowledge and ability. The advice we have given you will help you do that and I feel quite certain that you have a bright future in front of you.
