Are any open source alternatives to mathematica or maple or for that matter matlab??

I have octave.... but i wanted something which provides a GUI interface like maple or mathematica

Well, Matlab and Mathematica are expensive for a reason... There are no great alternatives. Octave and sage are some but there's also Scilab (http://www.scilab.org/) and Maxima (http://maxima.sourceforge.net/).

You could check them out but remember, they are free...

Just thought I'd point out that Matlab comes with native linux packages, albeit binary.

If you try Maxima (http://maxima.sourceforge.net/), I recommend using the frontend GUI wxMaxima (http://maxima.sourceforge.net/) with it. You'll need to install both of them separately (they're both in Synaptic package manager).
