I will be building a Ubuntu PC for my grandparents who live 1000 miles away and have no computer experience. I think I will be using Usermin, SSH, and VNC to make sure thing go smoothly. Wake on LAN will be used to start the computer need be. So I wondering if any of you have had similar experiences or have recommendations.

I'd go with Webmin as well as Usermin, I've heard things about DC++, never even heard of it til a few days ago here though, I honestly don't know what it does, but from screenshots, it looks like remote management to me. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry, but it might be something worth reading up on?

"DC++ is an open-source, ad and spyware-free client, written in C++ for the Direct Connect protocol originally developed by Neo-Modus.com, that allows you to share files over the internet with other users. The client is often updated at least once a month for bugs and new features."

So sftp and scp should do the same thing.
