storage in audio databases

There's a lot of information out there about music storage and online radio/streaming content, but it's a little hard to sort through. I'm specifically interested in the database issues involved, as in, are the songs stored on the file system or in the database and that sort of thing. If anybody has any links, books or whatever that would help pull that all together, that'd be great.
