View Full Version : Linux distro hierarchy?

I noticed that thread about Rav Tux putting Debian Lenny on his ubuntu install, and that got me thinking.

Unless I'm mistaken, Ubuntu is built from Debian, right? Now, Linux Mint is built from Ubuntu. Which is built from Debian.

That struck me as interesting since Mint updates come sort of "grouped" with Ubuntu updates (the latest one built off Gutsy) and Ubuntu versions come with the latest Debian underneath.

So... is there, like, some kind of map I can see of what's built off what? I'm wondering how deep the rabbit hole goes with some of these. Is there some distro that's five or more generations removed from the "base" distro?

That is correct.

There is a map. If I can find it, I will attach it here or provide a link.

well debian is one of the oldest distros around, second oldest next to slack that is still in operation.
there is a chain of distros that are based on something or another, Suse was once derived from slack, Mandriva derived from redhat.
really it all comes from the open nature of linux

It was quite similar to that.

That map is close, but it does weird things like call Kubuntu a derivative of Ubuntu. I guess that's accurate, but to me they're kind of the same thing. Still, I did find what I was looking for!

Debian -> KNOPPIX -> Kanotix -> Parsix, among others.
