I've just seen this great-sounding app for the mac:

Does anybody know if anything similar exists or is in development for Ubuntu/Linux?

Quicksilver is great yeah, I use Deskbar Applet with Tracker with Ubuntu and there is Katapult for KDE ...

Could you give more details of these apps - are they in the repos and how similar are they to quicksilver?

it also gives "gnome launch box" as a gnome/linux alternative on the quicksilver website

You can add Deskbar Applet to your Gnome panel and for Tracker you can go here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MetaTracker) ...
Quicksilver is better though.

There's not much development in GNOME Launch Box :(
