View Full Version : I'm rather vexed by my colleague...

One of my colleagues has been moaning a lot about the performance of his XP Home PC lately. Apparently he inherited it from a relative who had a lot of stuff on it and it is now acting in a flaky way since he removed a load of things from it.

I did my duty and told him that I would put Ubuntu on it with Skype, Picassa and all the other apps he uses a lot. No charge of course.

But today he took it to some shop in town and paid £40 for someone to install a ripped off copy of XP Pro.

AARGHHHH!

This sort of thing really irritates me. I hope he gets all the WGA popups.

If he's installed a pirated copy, I assume that he doesn't have the disks. So he's just set himself to be ripped off over and over and over again - every time he has a problem.

And, of course, he won't be able to download any updates from Microsoft, so his system is going to get flaky all over again.

i have another story for you - my wife's friend's XP machine wouldn't boot after trying to update norton antivirus. i asked them what they used the computer for, they said email and web browsing, so i offerred to put linux on it, but instead they took it to best buy, paid them to fix it, but then sound didn't work, so they took it back and best buy told them the audio card "went bad", and they paid for them to install a new audio card. all told, it cost them over $200. i guess there's good money in "fixing" windows machines.

Thanks Sporkman you gave me a good chuckle! The question is who dressed him though? Maybe he knows nothing about computers and if not for the modeling folks he would go around in a t-shirt and track pants! Oh well, I don't know if I've ever looked that good in my entire life.

After all my silliness I feel obligated to bring this poor thread back on track.
I find spreading Linux like spreading a cold. People have a thing against colds, and they feel the same way about Linux often. Yet paying so much for so little as your friend did is truly discouraging.
