Mips you are going to have hard time finding these items, As they are not produced any more, and the ones that are still on the market will command above average prices for them.

You might have to resort to places like craigslist or eBay.

Newegg has some of the 2x512kb cache versions, as well as some 2x1mb opteron chips that are socket 939, 2.2 to 2.4 ghz and dual core (I've heard nothing but great things about these chips).

This German website (http://www.jacob-computer.de/Prozessoren_AMD_-_Sockel-939_%28Athlon64%29_gruppe_10114.html) has some Dual-Core S939 Opterons, and they ship internationnally. Just send them an email before to discuss shipping costs (don't worry, the website is all in German, but they speak English ;)). Otherwise, I guess someone can order one for you and send it to you if you pay the CPU and shipping (feel free to pm me if you're interested).

Newegg does not ship internationally unfortunately. I was about to get the 4200 Toledo from them before I read their shipping policies which are US, APO/FPO only unfortunately.

Thanks for the link. Only problem is those opterons are pricey. 120euro for the Opteron 170 is a bit more than I would like to pay but i might have to consider it.

I'm a bit wary of eBay and I no longer have Paypal, they shafted me once. I will have a look though, maybe there is a merchant that will accept credit cards.

This one (http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00065629.html) seems to offer international shipping too.

Ok, I have a new problem, do I go for a Athlon 64 x2 4400+ Toledo or a Opteron 170 Denmark, cache is 2x 1MB for both. I do not think the Opteron supports AMD-V (virtualisation) though ?

Any ideas ?

The Toledos do not support AMD-V either. I'd go with the Opteron I think.

Any specific reason seeing the specs look the same except the Athlon has a slightly higher clock rate. Cache, wattage, voltage etc seem the same.

Not really but the Opterons are server-class CPUs, so if price permits, I'd tend to go with them. I guess they must be more reliable.

They are more different than you may think...

Reading that tells me no real advantages for me using Opteron.

I would like to thank you all for your time, suggestions & links.

I have come to the conclusion that this is not going to be worth the effort. Initially I wanted a CPU + 1GB Ram + 500GB HD.

After looking around I realised that for just a more than twice the above cost (not even thinking about delays due to importing) I could get myself a Core 2 Quad (Q6600) + cpu + ram + HD + MB for a pretty decent price from a local online retailer.

So it looks like I'm getting myself a Intel system to upgrade my existing system. I will pass my current hardware on to a family members PC.

I like AMD but their persistance in changing their sockets the whole time is becoming a PITA. I really wish they would design a socket and stick with it for longer.

Thanks again for all your help :)

In case anyone is wondering I will be getting:
Intel Q6600 Quad Core CPU
Gigabyte GA-G33M DS2R MB
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB HD
??? 2x 1GB Ram
