If you use the Greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748) extension, there are some fairly decent scripts for gmail (http://userscripts.org/tag/gmail). Actually quite a lot these days.

The site says that Better Gmail does not work since the gmail upgrade. However, she is working on it, and in the meantime, you can switch to the older gmail version to get Better Gmail to work.
