Have you tried Gnome's developer library?

Here you go. I've written and attached a very simple applet written in C. It's not a tutorial per se, but it's a small example that is profusely commented, so you should be able to glean what you need to know.

The only thing is the code mentions a .glade file but it is not included in the archive ...

Ah yeah. I ripped this code out of a Gnome panel applet I made which did need a glade file. But this example does not. That's just a left over comment from the original code. The example code should compile and work fine.

When I get time, I'll write up a Gnome applet tutorial. There is so much of Linux that needs vastly improved docs. Right now, I'm working on what will be a major tutorial (and simple examples) on ALSA. That thing desperately needs decent docs.

I found the example code included on this page very helpful.
I have attached a tar file that has a sample gnome applet that may be helpful to others. The attached file includes instructions on compiling and or just installing on Gusty 7.10. If you also create a simple applet please reciprocate by posting your code.

Even though this is an old thread, I prefer writing in Python so I've added a quick tutorial on my blog (http://blog.skeltonnetworks.com/tag/gnome-applet/) for making applets in Gnome with Python.
