What are your favorite geek movies?

My favorite 3 are, in no particular order.

1.) Antitrust (hackers 3)
2.) Pirates of Silicon Valley
3.) Revolution OS

I don't think Antitrust is hackers 3. I know Takedown is #2, but this is the first time I heard someone saying so. Not even IMDb has anything on this.

Hmm geek movies..

1) Any James Bond (better than thinkgeek, WAY ahead of their time).
2) Shattered Glass (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0323944/). Not computing related (journalism), but it's pretty geeky.
3) Voices of a Distant Star (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=775) (for text-messaging freaks).

Although I'm only 18 (the movie is older than me by four years), I can clearly remember everyone (supposedly a hacker inside a computer?) dressed as glow-sticks..

the MATRIX, obviously... come on, an unsure-of-himself computer hacker turning into a super hero and saving humanity? Has to be the ultimate geek dream right there.
I'm talking about the first one of course, not the really long mtv-clips that were Reloaded and Revolutions.

I don't know if these would qualify as your "nerdy movies" but they involved technology .

eXistenZ (one of my all-time favorite movies, trippy as hell)
Star Trek (most were good, except for that stupid one about the whales, man, what were they thinking?)
Short Circut (who made Steve Gutenburg a star again?)

of course Weird Science and The Matrix which were already mentioned.

KingBahamut

Nobody who saw Nicotina (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337930/)?

A really great movie about a geek who gets in trouble with some gangsters after delivering the wrong cd. And he uses Linux (or at least some Unix) on his machine :)

Apart from those already mentioned...
More computer related than "geek"

Sneakers
Good film - heh, looking for answers? try Scrabble ;-)

The Pursuit and Capture of Kevin Mitnick, America's Most Wanted Computer Outlaw

Office Space

It's not my personal favorite but I think I can mention it anyway:

Enemy of the state

The Bourne Identity

I don't really have a favorite geek movie... I like Donnie Darko, Crash, The Green Mile and Phone Booth.

Ĉon Flux is comming out in theatres soon, could be a geek classic. It's starring Charlize Theron and she's a babe.

She demanded a new, not as sexy wardrobe as the original one or the one she had already filmed in :-/. Aeon Flux needs no babe, just someone who can KickAss with style.

-SD-
LOL. Revenge of the Nerds was filmed in my dorm when I was a student at the University of Arizona. Yep, I'm old and I'm a nerd. Nope, I wasn't in the movie. You can see my dorm room window once or twice, though. In the late 80's we were the only people on our floor to have *3* computers in our room...now that think about it, I don't remember anyone else having one.

Okay, my votes:
Tron

Wargames

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (Oh, come on, they're as geeky as they come! and they use that time machine phone booth!) :)

No one has mentioned Star Wars? Not the new trilogy, the original one. At least until we met the Ewoks and Lucas made Greedo shoot frst.

The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Finally, the best of them all: BUCKAROO BONZAI!!!!!!!!!! (A true geek would give the full title: The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension (http://www.figmentfly.com/bb/bbindex.shtml)

Kapre

I don't if this qualifies, but I saw March of the Penguins (http://www.apple.com/trailers/warner_independent_pictures/marchofthepenguins.html) recently and loved it. Its not exactly a geek film but if you are a linux geek you gotta love penguins.

Lux Perpetua
August 30th, 2005, 09:08 AM
Sneakers is definitely the best of the geeky movies I have seen.
The Matrix is probably second.
I Robot was also good.
And I have to mention the animated film Robots...it is sort of nerdy, though not in-your-face.

I haven't seen very many of the other movies you all have brought up.

nickless
August 30th, 2005, 12:34 PM
Well if Ghost in the Shell is mentioned then I'll tell you about some other geeky animes :D

Battle Programmer Shirase
Didn't watch the whole, but he definitly is a geek, as well as his nerd enemy :D

Steamboy
Pretty geeky if you think about it :)

Cowboy Bebop
Ok this has just a geeky part, but you just have to love ed :-P

Perhaps a little cheesy, but Total Recall should count, I think.

I also think 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010 can be considered "geek" movies (after all, who doesn't have at least one sound bite of HAL somewhere on their harddrive?)

The Last Starfighter (a gamer who qualifies to become a starfighter because of his 1337 skillz)

Some others may include...

A.I.
Bicentennial Man
Contact
The Core
D.A.R.Y.L.
Explorers
Flight of the Navigator
I Robot
Innerspace
The Manhattan Project
MIB
October Sky
Stargate
Thumb Wars
THX 1138
Time Bandits
Timeline

Perhaps these aren't all "geek" movies, but they seemed to appeal to this geek, at least.

Hardware wars was good, but I busted a gut watching Bambi vs. Godzilla. I think I first saw them both on T.V. Bloopers and Practical Jokes with **** Clark and Ed Mcmahon. That was some time ago...

I first saw them with some friends when we rented a video while studying at the university in 1987. Late night stress relief at its best. I think we probably watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail for the 25th time that night as well.

I remember the Tara Theater here in Atlanta, they had a line that went around the theater twice. Waited in line , as a young kid, for a number of hours.

Did A Similar thing for the first Star Trek film, same theater.

Empire Strikes Back opened the week of my birthday and my friends and I skipped school and stood in line for four hours to see it opening day. I stood next to a guy wearing a stormtrooper helmet and I remember thinking it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. We kept taking turns saving places in line so each of us could go play Tempest.
