IRC Meeting Notes – November 6th
Subjects Discussed
A.Advocacy
I.School System
a.School contest involving having students write an essay. Winner would receive a free computer preloaded with Ubuntu.
b.Subjects for the essay included “Freedom”, “Choice” and “Open Source”.
c.Issues seen involved overcoming the perception that free is cheap
i.Solution could be to give the impression of modding, ie. a custom system. Special emphasis should be given to the visual impression
d.General consensus was that rural and disadvantaged school systems would be more receptive.
i.Union county and Mecklenburg county were contacted for input but have not responded.
e.Contact points for School systems discussed were Media and IT
f.Type of system is still an open question
II.General
a.Some discussion as to the reason why Linux isn't more fully adopted and the obstacles that it faces.
i.Speculation that Intuit products are a significant obstacle and need good alternatives
B.Migration
I.Some discussion concerning a Linux equivalent for MS Active Directory Services.
a.AFS was suggested as a possible alternative for a MS Windows 2003 AD Server in a pure Linux environment.
II.Discussion over the best time to convince a user to switch to Linux
