Hi, guys! I'm currently a communication arts senior, but I've always had an interest in computers. I started using Ubuntu just this summer.

Now, it's thesis time (one sem lang ang thesis ng mga Comm majors sa eskwelahan namin - I only have about three or four months! School starts next week.), and I already have an idea in mind. I want to marry my interests and create a media project (website, magazine, or social networking group, etc.) that would make the cause of open source appeal to Filipino youth. I have a lot of experience with working in and managing publications, but I'm also wondering whether an online presence would be a better idea. Things I plan on highlighting include Rep. Teddy Casino's bill to use FOSS in the government and, of course, our beloved Ubuntu.

Ano sa tingin niyo? Pwede bang humingi ng payo/puna/mungkahi? What are some of the problems I might come up against? Know anyone I could talk to about these things? And so on... :)

I want my thesis to be interesting, fun, and relevant. Yun na lang muna.

I think having an online presence is a good idea if you are to have FOSS as a major subject for your thesis since, as I understand, FOSS communities (like this one) are online. So having this presence can in itself be a demonstration of how FOSS works-- it's just a matter of how you are to use this presence to show its relevance to your thesis.

I do think it's a good idea to play around with FOSS and communication concepts like: how people who have different native languages can effectively communicate theories and solutions to developmental issues; and what can society in general learn from such communities? Off the top of my head, perhaps a look at Launchpad and this forum will prove useful: what makes these online applications work in some instances but not in others?

But then, I haven't slept in 24 hours so I'm really not thinking as straight as I would like. :D

What's your thesis' objectives? Do you have a theory already?

Thanks, guys. :)

This is how it works at our school - there are two options for Comm thesis: a traditional research thesis, or a project thesis. The latter is application. For example, for their project thesis, two of my batchmates made a zombie movie interpretation of some Filipino issues. (I still have to see it. :D) For their research thesis, my roommates explored the feasibility of a local children's television network. samhain's 2nd-paragraph suggestions would work well in a research thesis, so I'll keep that in mind in case my teacher rejects my project idea.

The project I want to do, like I said, is something that makes the cause of open-source appeal to more Filipino youth. I'm wondering whether to produce this as a pamphlet, a multimedia presentation, or a small website, etc.

I'm a McLuhan fan, but I'm still trying to work out how his medium theory will jibe with my project. If all else, fails, there is Agenda-Setting.

This is something like my thread a while ago. Here are the most obvious problems you'll encounter:

- Kids don't want to switch to an unfamiliar OS
- Kids use Windows mainly for surfing and gaming. ( cant argue with that )
- Kids have little interests in computer software. There are more students who expertise in hardware then software.
- Pirated Windows wins thier pockets in conjunction with pirated games.

Playing Devil's Advocate:

"Note again McLuhan's stress on the importance of awareness of a medium's cognitive effects. He argues that, if we are not vigilant to the effects of media's influence, the global village has the potential to become a place where totalitarianism and terror rule."

I know that zealotry isn't encouraged in these forums but... see anything familiar? Buwahahaha! Global village... digital media... computers... totalitarianism... then add NoOOXML to the mess and Web Standards. Oooohhhh! This is interesting! :D

make sure your teacher understands what Ubuntu is, what the whole new OS concept is. i.e. answer all the "stupud questions" like is it a new program? bagong windows? mac ba yan? Nagkaroon na ako ng prof na mababa yung binigay sa aking grade dahil hindi nya "gets" yung topic; it was a paper on cryptozoology.

You should also mention integration with other software- if I save a file in Linux, can I open in Windows (yes), etc.

Pag website, don't just make a super web 2.0 AJAX/Flash page... maybe also a dial-up friendly page, dahil marami pa rin ang naka-prepaid.

Have a look into Full Circle Magazine: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=270

You can download the 6 issues (so far) as a .pdf. Meron silang section focusing on Youth & Ubuntu. Baka makatulong.:KS

Thanks for the tips, guys! :D The timing of the heads-up about Full Circle is great; one of my options was to make an e-zine.

Yey! :D

I second what perbiu said. I liked the fonts specifically :) From dafont.com, I presume.

Keep up the good work!

Uy! Ok ah! :)
Ano nang goals mo para dito?

Hehe, salamat, guys. :)

Basically, the goal to find out how much students know or don't know about FOSS. I surveyed about 50 college students about that. :p Then I'll find out how effective it is by interviewing the ones who volunteered after they answered the survey.

Kstella: nice. Does that mean if majority of your interviewees prefered a newsletter, you would have built or acquired a mailing list instead of building a site? Anyway, it looks like a good "lab". Goodluck on your thesis.

Tapos e-mail through mailing list. :)

Yaaaay!

Presentation slide. The doll is an illustration by Gilda Cordero-Fernando, colored by myself.

Your usernames will be included in the Acknowledgments, hehehe.

Salamat, salamat, salamat! :lolflag:

One more thing... everyone's telling me to keep the project up. Who wants to start a group blog with me on FOSS in the Philippines? :)
