I figured this might interest you guys, the guys who write Quicksilver have opensourced (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/06/quicksilver-goes-open-source/) it, the svn is here:

http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/source

svn checkout http://blacktree-alchemy.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ blacktree-alchemy

So, what is the potential for porting it to linux, using GTK for instance?

Please note that I am not a coder, so I am asking what others think.

Isn't this basically the same as katapult?

Looking at the source, there is no indication on which licence it is under, and it is written in Objective C.

Apache License 2.0, according to the Google Code page.

and it is written in Objective C

What does this mean, as far as Linux portability is concerned?

Yes! One of the programs I missed the most from Mac. Awesome.

No, QS has tons more functionality, it's not just a launcher or even a searcher. A full port would be awesome.

Heh, it's what a program like Katapult dreams of being. This is one of killer apps that only the Mac has and every other platform has been trying (and failing) to emulate.

Never tried it, never even heard of it, but if it's that good it would be great to get a full port for GTK...

Quicksilver is wonderful, I hope it will reach the Ubuntu desktop one day ... I like DesbarApplet and Tracker but the last one is having issues in Gutsy. Nevertheless they're surrogate compared with QS.

Probably not much, that's what gobjc is for.

Yes, this would definately be very welcome... I think I remember reading somewhere that Katapult was actually inspired by Quicksilver...

Anyway, Quicksilver is awesome and if Ubuntu had it too, transitioning between OSX and Ubuntu would be so easy...

I switched from OS X to Ubuntu and really missed Quicksilver so I started working on something similar for a school project. Until the Linux Quicksilver port is complete (don't hold your breath), take a look at: http://do.davebsd.com

Wasnt quicksilver the names of a windows gui program that worked with mixmaster to allow for the sending of totally anonymous email??? I guess I must be confusing it with something else from the MAC world.
