What are some of the good backup programs out there? I'm pretty much looking for something that will archive and compress files in a directory into a single archive and dump it on an external drive. It would also be nice if it had a restore feature and a way to add new files to an existing backup archive, but that's not too important. I tried Grsync, but all it seemed to do was dump everything on my external drive which I could have done myself :p
Any suggestions, experiences with certain apps?

I love it, I spent a few days hunting and trying out everything and this is perfect for me.
Just make sure you have java if you want to use the GUI

Looks good. I'll definitely give this a try.

I use dump/restore (its in the repos) with gui i cobbled together for it on a small rescue partition with a vanlla install of feisty i boot into the rescue partion once a week and do a full backup to a large firewire disk.

You can also try webmin wich is very good and allows you to fo backups and lots of other stuff via a web browser

It doesn't sound like this is exactly what you are after, but I'm using BackupPC to back up three laptops (1 x XP, 2 x Gutsy) wirelessly to a server running Feisty. It was quite fiddly to set up, but it is very easy to use. TBH, it may well be over the top for such a small home network!

BackupPC has a very active and helpful mailing list.
