building a crossfader like the ones onn a turntable

hi, im interestied in djaying, and want to build my own crossfader like the ones found on a professional mixing table, utilizing a switch or dial, with no softwear type stuff involved. however, my idea has stopped short at finding plans for one, as google yeilds nothing but links to softwear, not schematic diagrams. i thought about it a while and decided to attempt it myself and am wondering whether i could possibly use a balence knob from an old stereo system in place of a sliding switch, and if so, what other components are needed
