I read an interresting article about the popularity of Ubuntu (found it on digg.) He/she compared the search terms "ubuntu" with "mac" and "windows" since the term "mac" is include in A WHOLE LOT of names i found it inaprorpiate. Therefore i compared "ubuntu" with "OS X" and guess what i saw?

Ubuntu graph is blue and OS x is red. http://www.google.com/trends/viz?q=ubuntu,+os+x&date=all&geo=all&graph=weekly_img&ctab=0&sa=N

Because nowadays people will search for "Mac" or "Leopard", and since Ubuntu is mainly gotten through download more people will search for it, whereas Mac users will buy it in a shop or from Apple.

Thats true, as shown in this picture (from the same source):

http://www.imagehost.ro/pict/05225533472f83456de31.png you cant compare it in that way, because "mac" is also used in many, many names. If you compare theese terms ubuntu is still the most popular distro..

no.

just because people search for "ubuntu" more than "os x" doesnt make ubuntu more popular than osx. ubuntu people might be more tech-savvy and use google more for solving their tech questions, whereas osx users dont really need to configure and solve problems as often as linux users. apple does have its own support network, so they'd probably reference them first.

This is an unfair comparison.

Ubuntu, Windows and Mac would be fair.

If your going for versions, you'll have to search for Gutsy, Vista and Leopard.

Ubuntu will get nailed in any like for like search, and it's ridiculous to tweak the search criteria to indicate otherwise.

I like Ubuntu as much as the next person, but let's not kid ourselves :/

I suppose you mean on Google people search more for Ubuntu than MAC OS X ?which probably doesn't mean much on Ubuntu's popularity

other than it's a popular search.

The graph suggests that Ubuntu was already more popular than os x in 2005, I don't think this is very accurate! Looks nice though.

GUYS! OMG! THE WORD THE IS MORE POPULAR THAN KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN BECAUSE WHEN I CHECKS THE TRENDS FOR BOTH THE WORD THE IS MORE COMMON!!!!!11111!!!!1

The same logic applies to this. Google Trends do not indicate actual popularity.

Ubuntu 7.10=red Mac Leopard=Blue

I did not want to use either "mac" "7.10" or plain "leopard" because that would be misleading... I found this graph interesting too..

Of course Ubuntu is gonna have more searches: I only search for it when something doesn't work right (happens to me a lot), and stuff just kinda works on a mac, so I never have to search for anything ;)

They didn't.
This is NOT the correct way to search/judge the popularity of a given term.
You have to use terms with as less ambiguity as possible, and "windows" "mac" and even "ubuntu" are full of sidetracks.

You can try using a substitute-couple to get a vague idea of the relative dimensions:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=gimp%2C+photoshop&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

but even that doesn't say that much for reasons that you can easily find explained on the web.

All you've proved is that Ubuntu gets more searches on google, not that it's more popular.

Stop fooling yourself with irrelevant statistics.

Stop fooling yourself with irrelevant statistics.

it did also prove that sex was more populair than any OS, would you say that that would be either untrue or irrelevant? do you?

now,
when i type ubuntu in the searchbar i get 52 google pages with relevant links
when i type windows i get 62 google pages with relevant links.

clearly this also shows that ubuntu is very close to being the dominant OS in the market.

There is also one thing I noticed. For example searching for "free audio player" returns players for Windows, at least the first results. To get the players for Ubuntu or another Linux-based distribution, you have to specify its name, like "free audio player for ubuntu". This also boosts Ubuntu searches.
