Volunteers Needed

Hello! My name is Stephanie Petris and I am the Educational Technology Facilitator at Winter Springs Elementary School. On November 10th and 15th I will be hosting an Edubuntu training session here. I am donating computers to families without computers at home. The first part of my presentation will be a general overview. Then parents and children will branch off to practice with the computer that they will be taking home. I will have approximately 10 families here on each training day. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to assist by showing the families how to use basic features and answer questions. I know that I won't be able to do it alone.

I cant make it, out of town the 10th and working the 15th, but put out an email to the list, and maybe stop by the IRC room and we will do everything we can to get you some presence out there for whatever you need, I know there are other likeminded users in Florida who would love to help out

Hehe, thats really neat. I'd be able to help if it was in my area. However, if you know anyone who needs general technology/specialized ubuntu help in the Brevard County area (Specifically School board of Brevard county employees), be sure to send em over here. We have a lot of students in this system from around here but no teachers that I know of off the top of my head.

E/C, thank you for posting. As far as I know all of the school districts only have eyes for Windows. Oh, how I wish that would change! If I ever hear of anyone that needs help in that area I will definitely send them your way.

If anyone has any spare keyboards that work I still need about 10. If I can't get any I'll have to buy them before the training sessions.

While I have everyone's attention...

I am installing images now. Yes, this should have been completed some time ago. :( I have very little time to work with though.

In order to save as much time as possible could someone please answer these questions for me?

1- Does anyone know the system requirements for Edubuntu 7.10? I only found the requirements for thin clients. I installed an older version last year without any issues but I know for a fact the computers I have to donate cannot handle compiz fusion, etc.

2- Can I get one up and running and use Ghost for Linux to make an image for the rest? If so, how can I do that? I posted a few weeks ago and never received a conclusive answer. I was told to use Reconstructor, but I use Ubuntu 7.10 at home and Reconstructor wouldn't work for whatever reason.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I might have to sleep here tonight to get all of these ready. :(

1. I'm not sure of the current requirements. I have a workstation of Edubuntu installed on a 400 MHz PII Compaq. It's not the fastest, but it's not too slow either.I think memory maybe be more important. I would recommend 512, but the machine I'm using has only 256 mb on it.

Alternatively, you could install Xubuntu, and load the educational software on with that. Most of the computers we get in at Free Geek are between 400 MHz and 1 Ghz, so we use Xubuntu primarily.

2. Ghosting is possible, but to be honest a fresh install from the Alternative CD (or with Edubuntu, the server CD with the Workstation option) is just as fast. Installing Edubuntu from the Desktop CD is like waiting for paint to dry.

1. If you're using edubuntu live cd... there is a minimum requirement 320 Mb in system memory to use it. http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/linux/ubuntu-releases/edubuntu/gutsy/
You can download the server edubuntu cd which seems to allow more machines to work with it and requires less than 320 Mb to install ( I am guessing that this is more of the text based type install disk similar to the alternate cd that some people are using instead of the regular standard ubuntu live cd). It is also recommended that if you use the live cd version to install that you also download the server version to give you access to more of the educational software that might not come pre-installed with the live cd version.

2. PartImage is a great program for Imaging I have personally used it where I work and could probably help you with learning it.
