View Full Version : Is Ubuntu using Windows drivers for hardware to work?

Hi,
in our local computer magazine I read the following:
"Ubuntu Linux is first Linux operating system that uses Windows drivers."

I can't find any web site to confirm this. I think this is not true. Windows and Linux are different operating systems, so drivers from one OS will not work on another.

This could only work if there would be some kind of emulation just like Wine (but Wine is not working on driver level so Wine is not good candidate).

Any idea if this is possible?

Thanks,
Abcuser

ndiswrapper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ndiswrapper) enables the use of some Windows drivers for wireless cards under Linux. It's not Ubuntu-specific, though.

Perhaps "ndiswrapper", also I doubt Ubuntu is the first linux distro using it....

Definitely not: ndiswrapper was in Knoppix before Ubuntu even existed.

Arthur, why did you post your question as an answer to an 11 month old thread?

If you have a question about drivers, try asking it in the General Help (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=331) forum.
