I'm curious about your first impressions of Linux being an Ubuntu experience.
This is basically addressed to new Ubuntu/Linux users (me included), but feel free to respond if your first Linux experience was with Ubuntu and it got you curious enough to try other distros (I haven't).

1. What do you use your home computer for?
2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
4. Are you duel booting? Why?
5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
7. What do you think of the Terminal?

1. What do you use your home computer for?

Mostly email and online banking. And lately reading the Ubuntu Forums and Questions.

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?

I'm retired, but I used AutoCAD (v9) ( Windows 98 ) in my last 4 years of work and then I started writing webpages ending up as a webmaster for a non-profit organization.

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?

Windows 2000 Professional

4. Are you duel booting? Why?

Yes, but W2K is not being used at all, it has NO other programs installed other then a firewall (freeware), and anti-virus program (freeware) and ZonedOut for MSIE. It exists because my ISP does not support linux and my wife said it should be there.

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

Yes.

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?

Yes, with TextPad. For the BLOCK cut and paste feature. Although I have not used it is at least a month now and I'll probably take it out and delete WINE with it.

7. What do you think of the Treminal?

For me it was like my old DOS days, so it has never bothered . I'm getting better at using it and have a text file of useful commands handy for when I need it. It's nothing to be afraid of.

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?

Without a doubt. Much more so then Windows.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?

Life is a learning curve. I came to Ubuntu because W2k crashed one time too many. I knew it wasn't windows, that it was a cousin of Unix and command line driven. Finally my anger and frustration of windows got the better of me and I switched.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?

So far, yes. As I said I'm retired, have no professional dealings with computers anymore so it's easy for me. I'm not a computer gamer, I don't have an iPod, nor do I listen to music on the computer. 90% of the time my speakers are not even turned on. I don't watch DVD's on my computer, although I can. It was an exercise I undertood just to see if I could do it. Success was mine.

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?

So many things. But the best is: Peace of mind. No viruses, no mal-ware, no security errors. There is truth in the words: It just runs!

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?

Absolutely nothing falls into this catagory. Even though I had a heck of a time getting my Palm to hotsync, mounting my second hard drive with read/write access and a few other things, but look at question #9

13. General comments not covered above.

I would love to be a programmer, to write or improve linux programs. I would like to be able to use Gimp to it's fullest to help the Ubuntu community. But, I'm just a home "user", one of many, I'm sure, that rely on and grateful to the community of programmers and graphic artists out there keeping things going.

Plain and simple, Linux makes more sense to use instead of Windows.

I do not have to explain why I say this because in time any new linux user will realize this.

As for Ubuntu, It just works the way it was meant to and to take this a little further, everyone should understand that there are thousands of computer configurations and not all of them will work perfectly with any Linux distribution. This is also the case with Windows as well or for that matter, any operating system.

1. What do you use your home computer for?
1. I use it for basic stuff like internet, pics, movies, music, and then a few must have applications, namely Sibelius 4 (music composition)

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
2. no, i'm a musician.

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
3. highly highly highly tweaked windows XP

4. Are you duel booting? Why?
4. Yes, dualbooting XP, because even though I have heard of people using Sibelius 4 under wine, i tried it myself but I could never get the sound working (the MIDI playback, the kontakt player). I prefer using Sibelius under Windows. Also, once in a blue moon I feel like playing counter-strike and haven't bothered to get it to work in linux as I have all my settings the way I want them in windows.

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
5. I would say 95% of the time yes, the 5% other time when I absolutely HAVE to work in windows.

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
6. I have it, but I don't use it regularly at all.

7. What do you think of the Terminal?
7. It's great!

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
8. Yes, there is plenty of online documentation if I do have a problem.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
9. Very little, and again there is a lot of help.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
10. Yes, I just choose to run some things in Windows.

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
11. customization, and the philosophy.

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
12. I can't think of too much.

13. General comments not covered above.

XP

4. Are you duel booting? Why?

Nope, no need :D

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

It's easy once you're used to it. I use it infrequently

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?

Took me a few days, then i was completely at home

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?

If I couldn't, I'd still be dual booting. I have lost no functionality.

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?

The support I can get to have changes made, the frequency of updates, compiz, and having a change

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?

1. What do you use your home computer for?
I use it mainly for typing up papers, webbrowsing, listening to music, and gaming
2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
Well, I'm a student so I use the same computer.
3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
Windows XP
4. Are you duel booting? Why?
Nope, Ubuntu all the way
5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
Yup.
6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
I would like to use it, but the UI is absolutely horrible. The amount of fiddling necessary is just ridiculous.
7. What do you think of the Terminal?
I don't really mind it. I don't really know any commands by heart or anything, but copying and pasting commands is easy and painless.
8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Dead simple, I love it!
9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
I think the learning curve for everyday stuff is pretty small. After a month or two it feels like home.
10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
Not, really. I can't buy any game at a store and install it easily, but it does 90% of what XP did, and so much more than XP or vista for that matter.
11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
Compiz hands down (I was ecstatic the first week) . The amount of free apps would be a second
12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
There are a lot of gaps as far as details go (just compare leopard to gutsy), a lack of a solid video editor for linux is a killer
13. General comments not covered above.
People ask me all the time if I'm running vista despite the giant Ubuntu sticker on my laptop(dell E1505) so I made a wallpaper that says "No, this isn't Windows Vista" I attached it to this post in case any of you have the sam e problem lol

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
yes. windows xp pro

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
i was mainly using windows xp pro and mac os x. xp on the desktop. os x on the laptop. i have previously tried some linux distros (RH9, Fedora, Gentoo), but i am impressed at the ease of install of ubuntu.

4. Are you duel booting? Why?
yes for now. CAD applications wont work on linux and there is nothing comparable.

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
no

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?

being rid of windows.

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
not sure.

13. General comments not covered above.
i have been using computers for many years. i think windows xp is the best windows version to date (havent tried vista though).

i also think that ubuntu is great for its ease of installation. like i said i have tried other distros. they were harder to install, but each had its own good points too. it is nice to have a linux distro available that practically anyone could install.

Pretty much, and more.

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
Stability!

1. What do you use your home computer for?

I mostly just surf the web, play movies and music, and do schoolwork.

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?

All of our computers at school use XP, but I usually bring my laptop with me.

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?

Windows Vista Home Premium

4. Are you duel booting? Why?

Nope. I do use virtual machines, though.

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

Yes.

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?

I haven't found any programs I need to run on WINE as of yet.

7. What do you think of the Terminal?

It's not my cup of tea, but it gives me better control of my computer.

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?

Definately. It's a whole lot easier to use than other OS's, and much less annoying than Vista.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?

It wasn't that bad at all. Everything is where you'd expect it.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?

Not everything. All of the video editing programs I've used on Linux have completely sucked, and I am required to use MS Office in a Computer Applications competition I'm in. Other than that, I can do everything!

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?

The myriad free programs available, and COMPIZ. Oh yeah, stability, too.

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?

The terminal, and the lack of good video editors.

13. General comments not covered above.

The community that surrounds Ubuntu and all other Linux flavors is second to none. From hobbyists to hardcore developers, there is always someone to answer your question.

1. What do you use your home computer for?

Web,series(fansubs),programming,games.

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?

Ye, linux when possible.

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?

fckgw-rhqq2-yxrkt-... :P

4. Are you duel booting? Why?

Ye, trying out all the flavours > (k/x/)ubuntu,fedora,suse,etc..
Still new @ the linux-thing(loving it btw) . . sofar ubuntu is my favourite! <3 <3

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

Mostly, go into another distro now and then for partimage of my ubuntu-partition.

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?

Yes! Cube Explorer, w3l.exe.

7. What do you think of the Terminal?

Totally awesome that you can do what you want when you want, even if the results aren't always desired ;P It's great that nothing is hidden and you know (or can find out) what's going on on your system and configure eVeRyThiNg!

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?

Yea. I'm still getting to know where what is (switcd like a month ago). Gnome is nice, especially once you install compiz-manager. Not that I use it per say, but it's nice to show off linux :D

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?

Very easy. All the links are just in different places. The 'find' option in the prefrences-grouped-together-menu-thingie is super.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?

No. I miss wordweb (offline dictionary with South-African english) the most. Also some windows apps give me funny errors/don't work(100%) in wine. My games run ok.. but thats because I have relatively new hardware and my driver-software isn't provided for linux. ( using experimental intel driver atm.)

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?

COMPIZ. compiz, cOmpiZ . . . The security (you only have to worry about screwing around when your password is asked :D). The ctrl+al+backspace for the X-restart, and last but not least, CoMpIZ!!

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?

New drivers aren't always supported well (fedora core is nicer in this aspect by personal experience). Linux in general would be great if it comes with (an option to) install mp3-to-ogg converters, and also VLC ,or the option to install it with the cd.

13. General comments not covered above.

Just a suggestion.. maybe adding a 'popular-posts' to the help file that includes the most posted/asked mostly-noob questions (resolved one's ofcourse) so that you don't have to scour through a couple of posts to get the right one. I make it sound a lot worse than it is! Just for that friendly touch to get more ppl into ubuntu/linux easier/faster.

Thnks for all the support everyone! The 'spirit-of-ubuntu' is awesome :guitar:

1. What do you use your home computer for?
Surfing the web, email, photo storage.
2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
XP and Edubuntu
3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
OSX and Vista
4. Are you duel booting? Why?
No, no need.
5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
Yes.
6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
No.
7. What do you think of the Terminal?
Fine as far as it goes, I guess. Don't use it much.
8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Yes.
9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
It's pretty easy. If you know how to use OSX and Windows, you can use Ubuntu. The only thing is, for many, I think having to use the terminal would be a barrier to using Ubuntu. I'm thinking your average Windows user who's never seen a terminal, asking them to figure out how to install the flash plugin for Firefox so they can watch YouTube might scare them off.
10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
No. I can't control my computer with a remote and there's nothing like Apple's Front Row software that I could find yet that streams all your media to the TV .
11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
Intuitive way of doing things, how Ubuntu organizes programs via the applications menu, how downloading software from the repositories is so easy.
12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
Buggy features, like erratic battery messages and power management issues, like how it doesn't always suspend or hibernate like it's supposed to.
13. General comments not covered above.
Security and stability make it worth it for me. I understand Ubuntu can't include codecs for Mp3s and flash plugin for friefox in their distro, so this will probably remain a big turnoff for most people who want something where everthing works right from the get-go.

1. What do you use your home computer for?
Internet browsing, email, school research/assignments, lengthy text files, programming, downloading, DVD creation/burning.
2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
School, I use my laptop, same as for home. School computers use Windows XP.
3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
Windows Vista.
4. Are you duel booting? Why?
Yes. I've never used Linux before and want to test it for a while before I make the complete conversion. My school has a SecureW2 internet connection and I'm not sure if Linux will connect just yet.
5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
No. See above.
6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
Not yet. I'll be trying it soon.
7. What do you think of the Terminal?
Love it. I miss DOS. This makes me feel at home.
8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Very, although I'm not new to computer tweaking.
9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
It reminds me of when I used to modify Windows 95 and program, so it's not too difficult. Going from Vista to Ubuntu is a big shift, mainly because of the hands-on approach to modifying. You go from a OS that's pretty set in its ways to one that's designed to be tinkered.
10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
So far, yes, although I haven't tried to connect to my university internet system.
11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
The ability to change whatever you like.
12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
Some features weren't available out of the box. However, I enjoy working these problems out.
13. General comments not covered above.
Ubuntu is a great OS. The free software alone makes it worth the switch (or at least having Ubuntu dual booted along with Windows). Having an OS that's meant to be changed, and doesn't resent you too much for your tinkering.

4. Are you duel booting? Why?
Yes, dual booting ubuntu and kubuntu ( no windows )

7. What do you think of the Terminal?
Best thing since sliced bread.

Learning curve wasn't too bad. Having experience with Unix and it's structure helped immensely.
10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
Yes, and more.
11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
The continuing improvement in the Ubuntu distribution over several versions and the ability to to do what " I " want my computer to do.
12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?

I'm curious about your first impressions of Linux being an Ubuntu experience.
This is basically addressed to new Ubuntu/Linux users (me included), but feel free to respond if your first Linux experience was with Ubuntu and it got you curious enough to try other distros (I haven't).

1. What do you use your home computer for?

Email, web surfing, online banking, remote access to work computers, online poker.

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?

Primary work station: Dual boot Windows XP/ Redhat Enterprise 4. I also work on Windows Server 2003 and solaris servers.

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?

DG Unix, Windows (many versions), Linux (several distros), solaris (8, 9 and 10)
4. Are you duel booting? Why?

I've moved from dual boot to dual computers. I have a Windows XP box and a Kubuntu box. I use the Windows as my primary email client (Thunderbird) and for online poker, also for some web surfing (especially sites that work better in IE).

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

No. I use Windows quite a bit (No linux clients for online poker sites).

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?

I pretty much gave up on Wine. I spent hours tweakin, and most applications still didn't completely work. If I need to run Windows software, I use Windows.
7. What do you think of the Terminal?

I find that many tasks are more easily accomplised witha command line that with a GUI. This is even true in Windows, in spite of the crappy command shell painfully primitive scripting language.

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?

Yes.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?

I've been using UNIX and Linux for a long time, so I had no trouble piciking up Ubuntu.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?

Mostly, except for running Windows software

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
Good performance (on elderly Pentium IV 1.4gHz system), ease of software installation.

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?

Silly setup with no root password. Fortunately this is easily fixed.
Inability to boot to console only with boot parameter in default setup: Also fixable, but took a little more hacking.

13. General comments not covered above.

This is the first Linux distribution I have seen that I think my Mom could use. She's no dummy, but not too computer-savvy.

1. What do you use your home computer for?
Personal Finance, Email, Music, Pictures (that one is XP, with gOS as a VM for play), spouse uses a Vista PC for Email, Pictures, Solitaire, Bridge.
2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
Yes, laptop, dual booting XP and Ubuntu 7.10.
3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
Too many to mention.
4. Are you duel booting? Why?
Yes, to separate work and personal use on my company laptop
5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
No
6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
Gave up trying to configure it
7. What do you think of the Terminal?
No problem, old time Unix user
8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Yes for most things, but really hard for some things (laptops and video drivers for special effects, Wine, Samba)
9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
No problem
10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
No, the personal finance stuff, Quicken, TurboTax. I have a Zune player, no go with Linux. Wine might solve these, but cannot figure it out, or it is not really supported well.
11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
Saving an old laptop with Xubuntu.
12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
Not be able to fully switch to it
13. General comments not covered above.
This forum is great.

1. What do you use your home computer for?
Surfing, banking, music, photos, video, email, games, a little web design.
2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
Stuck with Win2K at work. Rumours of a migration to XP abound!
3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
XP, still do in fact. Before that Win98, 95 and 3.11
4. Are you duel booting? Why?
I boot into Windows for games
5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
Nope
6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
Nope, I find Wine to be a pain. If you really, really need to use a Windows ap, why not just use it in the OS where it works properly
7. What do you think of the Terminal?
A useful tool to have, but I tend to only use it when things are broken
8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Absolutely
9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
I don't think the learning curve for general use is at all intimidating. A lot of aps that people use a lot (like Firefox) are cross-platform, and if everything is working well you shouldn't ever really notice the OS itself.
I think the "learning curve" that intimidates people is the fault-finding involved in less-than-ideal installs. Arsing around with wifi/graphics cards/fstab is pretty full-on for a newbie, but Ubuntu is making excellent stides in removing those hurdles.
10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
Nope, the state of Linux gaming is dire. Otherwise i'm extremely happy
11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
Not having to do constant security maintenance. Ease of installing software. Having a fully functional 64-bit OS. And Compiz-Fusion!
12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
The bugs in Gutsy that have made me turn into a distro-***** lately.

No i do still have XP on my laptop for most games.

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
Yes. For my games although alot done run, but hell this system doesn't crash!!

7. What do you think of the Terminal?
Not too keen on it to be honest but i do love the package manager.

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Yes i suppose it is. Wine on the other hand really grinds my gears haha.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
Well it was kinda easy to pick up i suppose well the basics at least.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
No,but i don't expect to it's a different OS

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
At school, they're all Win XP

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?

Yes. Proprietary software.. games.. Photoshop..

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

Fantastic. I like being able to use the keyboard for everything. :)

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Yes. Very much.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
Very low/easy. As long as you look through the forums, you should be able to pick up basic commands very easily (at least, I did).

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
No. Steam/Valve games and Photoshop are basically locking me in (don't tell me to use the GIMP).

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
The new experience. I like using something different after having used windows for my entire life, and I'm a big sucker for customization. Support is also great in the forums.

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
Probably video card driver issues. When I first started using 5.04, everything worked fine (wireless and all), until I started trying to install fglrx instead of that mesa driver... no go; had to reformat a bunch of times until I gave up and found that the default driver is good enough (now, as long as it runs compiz fusion, I'm fine :p).

13. General comments not covered above.
I think Ubuntu and the Linux community has made great leaps and bounds since I started using it 2 years ago (Compiz/Fusion, Dell, Ubiquity, etc.)

1. What do you use your home computer for?

Work, play, learning about computers and experimenting, watching DVDs, playing music, web browsing, email ... Lots of things really!

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?

Where I used to work I used Windows, but I used to also boot up my test machine in Ubuntu!

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?

Microsoft Windows XP

4. Are you duel booting? Why?

No, I switched "cold turkey".

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

Yes (counting its derivatives like Xubuntu).

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?

No, I haven't needed to.

7. What do you think of the Terminal?

I use it a lot, I feel quite comfortable in it now.

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?

Very.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?

It took me a couple of weeks of breakages and frustrations before I really got used to Ubuntu, but I was ready to learn new things so I got settled in to the Linux way very quickly, and now feel Windows to be very inadequate for me.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?

And then some. The only thing I can't do is play Windows games, but I think that's only saved me a lot of time and money at the end of the day.

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?

I couldn't live without a package manager now I use Ubuntu, but I also value the community highly.

Reading, writing prose and code, listening to music, watching videos, internet stuff. What don't I use my computer for? Gaming. That's it.

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?

Yes, Windows XP

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?

Windows XP

4. Are you duel booting? Why?

No, I wiped XP from my life recently. I don't need Windows for anything so why should I allow my life to be controlled by Microsoft.

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?

At home, yes. I still have a laptop for work with Windows installed and of course I use Windows at work.

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?

Not yet. I might need to one day. I have it installed, but haven't needed to use it so far.

7. What do you think of the Terminal?

It's just like the command line in Windows. Simple. Powerful. Useful.

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?

Extremely. Synaptic is beautiful and saves so much time and effort.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?

The biggest learning curve for me was trying to get Ubuntu installed. It was difficult. I also had to learn how to install a few other things like java for firefox, nVidia drivers, and flash. Everything else was extremely easy with very little learning curve involved. Ubuntu's menus are simple and logical IMO. It was extremely easy to customize my shortcut keys and look and feel.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?

I don't know yet. I can certainly do most of it but I am still new, so I can't answer for certain. I have only had ubuntu installed for about a month.

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?

I love the simplicity and ease of use of Ubuntu. I love that Ubuntu came with almost everything that I needed already installed. I love that Ubuntu can recognize my hardware and install the necessary drivers with little intervention. I love gtkPod!

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?

The installation was painful. I spent a few days searching for boot options that would even get the live cd to boot. I downloaded Knoppix and Mandrake too and they would not boot either though. Finally I discovered the magic formula to boot and it's been easy ever since.

13. General comments not covered above.

I am not new to Linux. I have installed many distros on servers and virtual machines to use for one project or another. Once I tried Ubuntu on a test machine at work, though, I decided to get rid of Windows at home. Ubuntu inspired me. Now, if I can just figure out how to pronounce "ubuntu".... :)

1. What do you use your home computer for?
Everything, from tasks at home to work and school. Emailing, programming, LaTeX, writing papers, music, internet, Mathematica, watching videos, etc...

2. Do you use a computer at work? What OS?
Yes, ubuntu and Scientific Linux. (Red Hat Clone)

3. What OS did you use prior to Ubuntu?
Windows

4. Are you duel booting? Why?
No

5. Are you using Ubuntu exclusively?
Yes, except the occasional connection to a computer using Scientific Linux. (See above).

6. Are you using WINE? What programs?
No.

7. What do you think of the Terminal?
Though Ubuntu is getting to where you don't need a terminal, I've found you are better of knowing how to do most things over a terminal. Once you do, many things are able to be done faster, more efficient and exactly how you want it done using a terminal.

8. Do you find Ubuntu easy to use?
Very easy. It does take some learning coming from a Windows world. But taking time to learn how to do things "the Linux way" is definitely time well spent. This learning will really pay off in the long run.

9. What do you think about the learning curve, going from your old OS to Ubuntu?
Again, takes a little work, but more than worth it. Ubuntu requires the least work.

10. Can you do everything in Ubuntu that you did in your old OS?
Yes, and more. (Though I'm not someone like a gamer or completely depended on Windows Apps. Again, I've learned how to do everything with Linux apps I used windows apps for in the past, and love it.)

11. What do you like best about your Ubuntu experience?
I'm more productive. I have all the tools in front of me I need without having the hassle of bloat and proprietary issues, and money and etc...

12. What do you like least about your Ubuntu experience?
There is still hardware that doen't work perfectly with Ubuntu without having to "hack around" problems.

13. General comments not covered above.
I can't stress it enough: going to Linux does require work. You have to relearn how to do things in the Linux world. ***But the effort pays off so well in the end.***

Again, I have all the tools I need in front of me to be highly productive and I don't have to hassle with software issues you so often encounter in the Windows world.
