View Full Version : No FOSS reps at the table? Why Not?

I've found that a lot of trade organizations, industry-govt partnerships, etc. have absolutely no FOSS reps on their boards. For instance, I was recently looking at NEA's website and I found some info on something called the "Partnership for 21st Century Skills (http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/)." According to their own website, This organization has... "emerged as the leading advocacy organization focused on infusing 21st century skills into education."

Then I took a look at the list (http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=81&Itemid=82) of members. Microsoft is there. Blackboard (now waging a controversial patent battle against a competitor) is there. As far as I can see, no FOSS representative. No Redhat. No Canonical. No Moodle.

I can just imagine the conversations among the participants (warning: satire alert):

schools: what solutions do you have?
MS: we have lots of good stuff. Vendor lock-in and viruses included at no extra charge. Give us money.
Blackboard: we have online education. In fact, we patented it! Remember, if you use another product we might sue.
schools: what about open source?
industry reps: don't be silly. There's no such thing.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
