I've recently read bout PiTiVi (http://www.pitivi.org/) and now there's DIVA (http://diva.mdk.org.pl/) ("motion video editing in mono & gstreamer") in the works.

A seemingly neglected thread here (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=58194) makes me wonder if many here have tried PiTiVi much less heard of it.

What do you use on your Ubuntu boxes for video editing?

kino. its really the only thing that works that is free software. there is always cinelerra, but i have never gotten that to work.

kino supports all the features i need, its just not terribly easy to do it. i can make dvd with full menu support(dvdstyler), etc using kino+dvdstyler. i push out ogg theora videos to my site too. again, its not terribly easy, but doable.

pitivi or diva are going to own the house! i look forward to them both. pitivi more so.

JD, Cinerella is a bear to deal with, I dont think ive ever gotten it to work either.

The only other alternative that I know of is LiVES -- http://www.xs4all.nl/~salsaman/lives/

You can get working copy running on DyneBolic LiveCD, but Ive never tried to compile it in Ubuntu.

Other than that, yes Kino is the way to go.

Kino is the only free solution...

DIVA is a Summer of Code project... thus open source.

I can also see a PiTiVi Source Code download link...

or are you refering to something else..?

Is there something moving forward at PiTiVi? I read their was a release in November 2007. Is this usable or is this still alpha?

I also posted about Diva (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4353206#post4353206).

What about Kdenlive (http://kdenlive.org/)?

The version of kdenlive in hardy is very usable (the one in gutsy crashes too often for me) and I think it is the best video editor crrently available on ubuntu. It is also being actively developed, although not as fast as I would like :-)

I love KDEnlive for simple stuff. But Cinelerra is the only viable offering for complex stuff.

In case anyone is wanting to try Cinelerra and didn't realize that this thread is almost 3 years old, the CV version is now a breeze to install by just adding their Ubuntu repos.

I was planning to try out these programs . . . I'm pretty curious about Cinelerra, I read that it crashed a lot but that was an old thread, so I hope that it's in a better shape today.

I used Cinelerra a while back for a fairly big project. It was stable for me. I loved it. It's very powerful. If you're doing something without a lot of requirements, though, KDenlive is the way to go.

Avidemux.

On Windows I used to VirtualDub but that has problems with VBR audio, but AViDemux builds a timemap and syncs the audio so you cut segments out of the video easily.

I'm using Gutsy, but it's been about a year since I last tried to install cinelerra. Is it easy to install? I had a hell of a time trying (and failing) a while back...

It's extremely easy. There's a repo here

I used the x86 version.
