So, this is the official wallpaper from OSX Leopard, the new Clearlooks engine with a touch of orange and Midnight theme from Emerald. I'm using Myriad Web as the desktop's font. The icons are a mixture of several themes. I've been working with them for a long time and the set isn't complete yet. But I'm pretty proud of what I have until now.

Oh, and I'm on Xfce.

For November on my desktop PC, I've gone with a more functional "widgety" style to the desktop. This means I can get to stuff easier than in normal Gnome, but have absolutely minimal clutter. On the plus side, I can add extra "minibars" as I call them, if I want extra functionality. I can also make these completely invisible until I want them, unlike plain gnome. In terms of opening windows, I knew that although a menu you click is very nice, a keystroke launcher is just more efficient. I therefore use google desktop most of the time to run apps. "ter" gives me the terminal, "op" gives me opera, etc. I still use the normal menu from time to time, especially with the places menu.

Here is my clean desktop. The idea here is to have a "dreamy" wallpaper, which just cheers me up in general.

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/4408/desk1tc8.th.jpg (http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=desk1tc8.jpg)

With lots of programs on one desktop, nothing changes to the interface. When browing the web with a maximised browser, the menus are almost invisible until you need them. "What about all your apps?" I hear you cry. Well, moving my mouse to the bottom screen runs the Scale plugin of Compiz, where the animation is sped up. This gived me a better idea of what programs I have open, and is great for cross-referencing info from a webpage onto Abiword, etc. On top of this, it gets rid of a minor annoyance of me, when people message me on Pidgin. If I'm working, a quick flick of the mouse and I can see if what they've said is worth replying to. I also turned off "show desktop when clicking background" so that it's impossible to lose my windows.

I decided to go with clearlooks due to its speed and general unified interface, with nothing I really don't like about it. In terms of Window Borders, I wasn't happy with Clearlooks particularly, so went with a simple white border.

http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/1327/desky2ob1.th.jpg (http://img61.imageshack.us/my.php?image=desky2ob1.jpg)

Finally, I use the cube plugin to clear my head and if I want seperate apps on different sides of the cube. Either way scale shows all my apps running on all workspaces, giving me an overview and letting me see the big picture.

http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/1549/desky3eb9.th.jpg (http://img61.imageshack.us/my.php?image=desky3eb9.jpg)

Finally, I use Xfce because of the better transparency options, simpler filemanager, and I got more stuff done while using it (at least with this interface). Also, gnome seems to have a problem with the scale plugin, in that it is very jittery, and ends up giving me a headache. With Xfce, it seems to run smoothly, at the max my monitor supports (75hz).

To summarise, these are my theme details:

Themes: Clearlooks (preinstalled) running Xfce.

Wallpaper: Can't remember the name, but it's on the 4th or 5th page of wallpapers on gnome-look.com, if you sort by best rated wallpapers.

Icons: NuoveXT 2 - I honestly haven't found a better general-purpose icon set.

Programs: Nothing really to talk about here, but the music player is Banshee (in the repos) and the filemanager is Thunar, which is on by default in Xfce.

Well, I used to have a fascination with emulating other desktop environments and mixing them, but now I'm sticking to creating a uniquer look for gnome. (I don't think uniquer is a word.)

also, i used to use AWM, and still have it on my box, but I really had given it some thought and I actually enjoy using the computer more without a dock and just having a panel up above to store the windows. I find the dock to be a little monotonous, and I always would put it on auto-hide anyway since I like to have as little obstructions as possible when using applications.

i'm using a darker theme now that it's november :( , thought it would fit the weather better. screenshots attached.

details:

Font: Dingbats (just discovered this yesterday and loving it)
Emerald theme: QuickBlackMac (edited a bit, with Dingbats font etc.)
Background: got it from art.gnome.org i think, i honestly forget.
X11 mouse theme: Grounation (from gnome-look.org)

Just got this all set up at the end of October, so it'll probably stay as is for a few more weeks:

http://images.ogunderground.com/gal/Halo_3/_thb_cube_full_b.png

Got as many C-F plugins working as I possibly could. Getting Nautilus to have a transparent parent background was pretty easy (though the patch didn't take effect until after I had ended Nautilus, restarted it, fiddled with the preferences and then restarted my computer twice)
Emerald theme is Clean Black, but with blue. I have to admit that the title bar font is Segoe Print, I've been too lazy to change it to an open handwritten font.
Cube cap is just a random wallpaper I picked up somewhere while I was searching for wallpapers to use.
AWN is on the standard 3d theme, but with blue/clear colors.
Screenlets are the default clock and CPU, with Sidebar and ClearWeather.
GTK theme is the newer ClearLooks.
Two of the pics from Halo 3 are mine (the blue ones)
FF theme is Gnome, but it doesn't really work too well, unfortunately.
And I think that's about it...

There's been a Wallpaper plugin for a while, which is great and all if you don't need icons. The trick is to patch Nautilus and libeel to recognize the _COMPIZ_WALLPAPER_SUPPORTED hint.
The patch is here (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=444320). You'll need the best Nautilus source you can find. I just went and picked up a 2.2.
There is one downside I and a few others have noticed: the extract shortcut normally found on the right click menu for archives is missing. I never really use it anyway as I extract most of my tarbells, etc. from Archive Manager.

Anyway, the patch will make Nautilus use a transparent background on the desktop when the Wallpaper plugin for Compiz is enabled, so it still displays the icons.

How I did mine is available at http://ubuntukids.org/blog/?p=43

Also, I've tweaked my info.sh script a bit to include the background details, something that I've not seen on many of the shots here. How that was done is available from here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=590937

There is no point in posting a screen shot, my screen is pure black, no icons, panels, bars, or anything.

I use Fluxbox, and wrote this theme:

Is there a way to remove the freaking insanely annoying arrow form the start button? In the human theme it's the stupid little black arrow that really serves no purpose but to look ugly.

Boredom = re-theme KDE. More boredom = post it on a forum. It's Debian, but that sort of counts, right? ^^

The background is from http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_GIMP_Fractal_Backgrounds but it has a black tint applied to it with kdesktop. Kicker has everything set for transparent but has a lighter blue tint applied to it. The shell in the background is a transparent Eterm with fixed geometry and all the decorations removed, and the widget style is QtCurve for GTK and QT. And of course conky on the right.

Help a noob. Please tell me how am I supposed to patch Nautilus and where do I get the sources? From the sources repo?

Got as many C-F plugins working as I possibly could. Getting Nautilus to have a transparent parent background was pretty easy (though the patch didn't take effect until after I had ended Nautilus, restarted it, fiddled with the preferences and then restarted my computer twice).

Can you provide a link to how to get this to work? I am looking for this desperately.

RAV TUX finally convinced me to try out E17, and I like it. With compositing enabled, it is great! Now if only there was an integrated system tray... :-k

BTW, I have a GTK and a ETK theme, so that is why the two windows look different. Also, the wallpaper is animated, so that is why there looks to be a "glitch".

There is a long boring story here: My gf bought a laptop about 5 years ago. It has a good cpu - xp mobile 1500. It has 256 mb ram, and one of those horribly slow hard drives they put in laptops. Then they bundled it with XP, somehow figuring this was an excellent idea...

So she left it for useless about a year or so later, and me being a bit bored a few days ago set about making it worthy. Bye bye windows, welcome ubuntu. I figured openbox should be good, and I'm loving it. It's fantastic in every way, and this old laptop is now as snappy as my dual-core desktop computer.

Thanks Fuscia for the millions of openbox screenshots and inspiration:)

Nothing like a bit of forum action after a trip to the pub! here is the tar.gz (couldn't be bothered to work out how to create a zip file). I think it also has a rework of saturday that i used in a screenshot a while ago... I just did the whole folder.

Uploaded it to my mediamax account, so tell me if there are any problems (i think there's a download limit or something..). If anyone can recommend a better uploading site, feel free. I've tried a few, but they all have accounts that expire after 30 days, and its a hassle to keep re-registering...

shearn89 - try www.mediafire.com for file hosting, it's good.

How do you get the system info to *integrate* into the desktop like i've seen on many desktops? The one that shows CPU speed/temp, network usage etc...

Anyway, back on topic.. (Unfortunately, Photobucket doesn't show these at there full resolution, 1440x900)

Hi All

Nothing special here. I have a folder with a bunch of pics in it. Then I have a cron job that goes and builds a list of those pics and changes the desktop every 5 min. I have about 300 pics so I won't show them all but here's a sample.

I've seen a couple pics with a flat, reflective surface under the icons and the bottom of the screen. My gf wants to know how I can do this for her?

Also, does anyone know were the panel information is stored for the panels in xfce (Xubuntu)? I want to change my panels to autohide but I hate changing that when I switch to tablet mode so I would like to set up a script that does it automatically. To put it another way, I want to change the autohide setting automatically when switching to tablet mode.

Thanks, help is appreciated,

The icons on the bottom of the screen such as here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=49022&d=1194153161

To me they look like they are on a reflective table top. It's a cool effect. I'm on Xubuntu so it may not be possible

Also, because of this thread I've installed Conky. I have two questions though. First, has anyone had any conflicts with Firestarter and Conky? After I installed I'm having issues with Firestarter closing itself. Second, does Conky accept user defined variables? What I would like to do is:

if (${addr eth0} == 0.0.0.0)(
%user_var = eth1)
else (
%user_var = eth0)
)
IP: ${addr %user_var}

If that makes sense to anyone? Basically what I want to do is determine which network device is active and display the information for that device only. Right now I have a section for eth0 and eth1 and one of them is always inactive.

Thanks much for the help,

Looks like something inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's 2001. Pretty cool. Is there a site with more?

it is, its a vector from the movie. i don't have anymore, i found this on an imageboard. but here's the original if you want it:

Ahh... In one of my virtual desktops I have a terminal emulator with a black background, white font, on top and full screen running GNU screen with cplay in it. So it's like being in the CLI. I love Linux. :D I can switch to the GUI by just changing virtual desktops.
EDIT: The text is smaller and sharper than the CLI (ctrl + alt + F1-6).

There is a program for mac called snapshooter . I put the ss from my linux box to my mac and did it that way . You can also find some of those borders in psd form to put into gimp and do it that way but they never seem to come out as clean .

Just for interest, what is the font? Is it a standard one, and if not, where did you find it?

Incidentally, I'd also change the window title font - it's odd having that as a standard when all the other fonts are the script.

I know how you feel. I've only been away from Gnome for about a month, and I used to think exactly the same way.

The problem with KDE (at least in terms of appearance) is that all of the default themes are pretty ugly. But there's a big difference between KDE and Gnome themes, that being that KDE themes are ENORMOUSLY customizable. If you're willing to put 20 minutes or so into tweaking your widget theme, it can look beautiful. Same goes for KWin (window decorations).

Here we goes.

- Gutsy
- Compiz Fusion (though that likely doesn't show up here)
- Moomex theme: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Moomex-Theme?content=57063
- AWN with colorless glass and black border: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/%5BAWN+Theme%5DGlass-colourless+Black-border?content=64908
- Emerald with "Simple & Nice": http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Simple+%26+Nice?content=62864
- nuoveXT icons: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/nuoveXT+2?content=56625
- Wallpaper: http://swaroop.deviantart.com/art/Behold-the-eclipse-31806415

It's simple, and it's easy on the eyes. Exactly what I wanted.

Emerald theme is "Shade of Orange" by me. I'll probably upload it later. I've uploaded my panel background for you here (http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/2448/e5e7163e480736d00a8f3c1pi1.png)

Wallpaper pattern is here (http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/9855/pat20070806114012xq2.gif).

Anything else?

Nope! thanks man.

Some modifications made to my last snapshot:

49367

Using:
DE: KDE
WM: Emerald
WM THEME: Azurite Darkmod (with some tweaks)
KDE STYLE: Domino
ICONS: Main theme is Crystal Project, with icons taken from the Mac4Lin project and various places around the web.
WALLPAPER: Not sure where I got it, offhand, but would be happy to send it to anyone who wants it.

Edit:

FONTS: All of the fonts are from the Lucidia family. Lucidia Grande and Lucidia Console, mostly.

That's the best KDE desktop I've ever seen!!! :)
But I prefer Gnome ;)

Actually, 60's & 70's would be the more accurate description. (I watched Neil Armstrong step out onto the moon... ;))

I just happened to be listening to my 80's alternative collection tonight. I've got a little of everything from Classical to Electronica. About the only stuff I don't have is rap and modern country.

That has to be the best desktop I've seen here for ages. Not only in KDE. Honest.

Wow, thank you. Seems like my obsessive tweaking and lack of a social life have paid off!
