Well guys/girls, I got a cool idea after seeing a hand built computer case a few days ago.

I am going to use the basic ideas here, but make it into the Ubuntu box. :)

AHHHhhh...I will follow up with pictures later. I already have most, if not all, of the items I need.

can you give a little more detail what you want to do? are you going to mirror that design and just slap ubuntu on it?

Isn't that a bin? Couldn't something that isn't a receptacle for rubbish be used?!

Shouldn't you call it a Ubuntu bin, then?

I won't mirror it completely, I want to do a cube for it. Currently I have a wire mesh box that will allow me to fit all the pieces in. The problem I am having is that I am CUTTING out the plexiglass myself. Also, the mesh seems a bit flimsy, so I will probably have to fix it.

Overall, I just don't want it to look crappy.

That is a cool idea. I have a square version of that trash can that would work well ;)

About cutting the plexi, something like a rotozip ought to work well. I think Sears sells their own version.

Heh...I finally got most of the plexiglass cut. I tried everything for it: dremel, jiggsaw, and finally, circular saw. The only thing that worked without destroying most of the pieces was the circular saw. BLAH! I should have just gotten someone to get me some pre-cut pieces.

It's mostly complete now...It looks cool. A little bare, but cool...I think I kind of like that though. All of the components are connected, and I am currently using it to write this...*Phew*.

What's Left:
Ubuntu Logo
Aluminum around the CD drive (?)

I will follow up probably tomorrow with pictures and I hope to receive some input about it.

I'm sure it will look awesome!:)

When cutting plexi-glass it is best to use a circular saw with a fine toothed plywood blade turned backwards. This way it burns through the plex rather than chopping away at it.

Just some advice.

Yeah, that's what we ended up doing. It still messed a few pieces up, but I got some nice pieces out of it, thanks to my father who wanted to help me. He has a heck of a lot more experience and mentioned this to me.

I was afraid it would be too flimsy to use, considering the thickness, but worked nicely.

Here we go, everyone! The "Almost" completed case.

I STILL want faceplates and the logo. Give me some feedback...CONSTRUCTIVE, please.

everything looks real good except that dvd drive. it looks crooked and the metal around it pretty mangled and not clean.

Mostly that's from the photo, but there's a rib right there. It's clean as cutting goes. I think a faceplate would help.

for a face plate, you can get some sheet metal (look in the plumbing aisle at home depot) and cut the bezel yourself, then rivet it in place.

or something like this (Lian Li C-01 Universal CD Bezel) may work. maybe mount it to the drive, then mount it to the case so it sits flush.

actually, they sell bay covers that pop open to allow the drive to eject. this would be perfect.

but i can't find one. i had 2 on a case i just sold.
