I use Audacious, which is a fork of XMMS (I think). Also, XMMS is no longer in development.

I much prefer Audacious over XMMS. That Audacious is still actively developped is an added plus.

Yes, by multiple forks. BMP, BMPX, and Audacious to name a few. I think that Audacious is the closest to the original. They initially took the xmms code and ported it from GTK+ 1.2 to GTK+2. The lack of a security maintainer for xmms was the main reason that it was removed from the Gentoo Portage tree.

I saw that Slackware also removed it.

I uninstalled XMMS and am now enjoying audacious ;)

Your copy of XMMS appears to be broken. It's displaying songs in Danish. Try sudo apt-get install --reinstall xmms.

I used XMMS when I was new to Linux.

OK here is a problem streamtuner only seems to play with XMMS.

This is the only time I listen to music.

I completely removed XMMS and installed audacious but the audacious player wouldn't open.

So I reinstalled XMMS.

These themes work with Audacious too. Anyway, the one I use is here (minimalistic black) (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/minimalistic_black?content=61328). About your issue - I think you need to install the extra plugins for streamtuner.

XMMS still has a place on my Linux machines as it plays music, good crossfader, mp3 output plug in (for converting), easy to manage playlists, and doesn't rty to reorganise your life (files on disk).

Am I a luddite?

I'll have a look at Audacious though.

[edit] well that didn't take long, all set up and running as per xmms, even found an mp3 output plugin (needed converting from rpm with alien for installation). Accepted my preferred iAmp skin too. :)
best of all it "stays on top" when compiz/XGL is running, which xmms wouldn't do.

Audacious is my main music player, and I love it. The thing about XMMS is that even though it's no longer being developped, there are still some files that do not play properly on the most recent stable Audacious (1.3.2, and yes, I know the betas are out, but 1.3.2 is the only version that will compile for me) that play perfectly on XMMS, but not so on Audacious. There are also many files that do not display the correct track length, and the track bar is often all the way at the end while the song playing is nowhere near complete. Still, 1.3.2 is miles ahead of the previous version, which often played songs at the wrong speed.

If you were, you would be smashing computers instead of using them... ;)

Actually, you would be smashing steam engine powered machinery, if my memory of history isn't (too) faulty.

I was able to get that theme working on XMMS but not audacious...damn computer says I don't have write access. Thats what I miss about KNOPPIX, you are always root.

How do I get write access, or better yet how do I permanently sign in as root?

Make sure the root account is enabled with the user tool and set the password. Then log in through GDM using root as the username and set a password.

The short answer is you don't EVER sign in as root. You can get temporary superuser privileges with sudo.

Now how do I change skins on audacious?

XMMS was the first player I used in Linux. It played everything from WMV's to Mp3's to mp4.... it's just that, the sound was **** poor.

I thought it was my sound card at first but good playback from other players soon debunked that. I still like RythymBox, a little bland looking but overall, very functional and easy to navigate.

although i have audacious too, i haven't really found a compelling enough reason to spend the five seconds porting my library to it haha

((one of the xmms themes i really like is the 'cool vistaish' from gnome-look.org))

Perhaps the version in the repositories has issues, but the version I use on Gentoo has had none of the issues that have been listed here. ;)

XMMS went catatonic and then was revived as Beep Media Player for a few years, finally it got its name back and became XMMS again. So rumours of its death is much exagerated.

I used XMMS for a long time, until I found Audacious. It's a great lightweight player that does what a music player is supposed to do... play music! I don't need my music player to have all this cover flow, and wikkipedia junk. Just play music! Now I just need to find a way to sync Audacious with my iPod...

Audacious skins have to be installed in /usr/share/audacious/skins.

So you would need to open a file browser with root permissions, or
sudo cp themename.tar.gz (or .zip) /usr/share/audacious/skins

Don't know why this is, but they insist that skins cannot be installed on a per-user basis.

I personally have moved over to Quod Libet as my media player (similar to Exaile).

This is not the case on my computers. I can copy skins to ~/.audacious/Skins and use them without any difficulties. I use audacious 1.2.2 on Dapper. Did things change in other/later versions?

Hi, it does not have to be installed system wide.

You can copy your skins to

~/.local/share/audacious/Skins

It has something to do with Audacious adopting the XDG BASEDIR standard.
