By which I mean building analog circuits.

I'm a graduate student doing experimental research, and somehow this is largely missing from my background, but now I have come to the point where it would really, really help me along to be able to put some things together.

I've had a course on circuits a few years back, so I know enough to get started and immediately run into trouble. I can find circuits online that do things similar to my needs, but I need to customize them. As such, I need to understand what different parts do and how to change them.

So I ask you, oh wise Ubuntu forums, what books and reference materials would you recommend? Please be kind - I'm a graduate student. I'm poor. I can afford things that are cheap (below $50) or in the library.

For years this amazing little hand-written book was carried in Radio Shack and gave /so/ many people the necessary solid foundation. It's The classic. Find it and become one more grateful soul.

Though his focus is mainly on electronic music and recording, Craig Anderton's books (http://books.google.com/books?q=inauthor%3ACraig+inauthor%3AAnderton&btnG=Search+Books) are very apprehensible for the beginner and still useful for the expert (and you might even find some of them in your local library).

Awesome! Lessons in Electric Circuits seems just what the doctor ordered - look pretty thorough, easy to understand, and free. I'm definitely reading through it.

And Forrest Mims' book sounds pretty good, too.
