help with a research paper

so i'm doing a research paper on linux and need some help from the people that have been doing the linux thing for a while.

1. when did compositing start for linux?

2. what are some innovations that linux has over mac and M$?

Macs are now Unix based, and MS still hasn't copied features of Linux that OSX did.

1. I first heard of XGL in 2006, but I believe it was out before then.

2. They are not open source. And MS doesn't have a nice packaging system like apt (not sure what macs use).

thanks for the help so far, but i need specific awnsers. like what did osx copy from linux? i have no experience with osx so any help there would be nice.

The multiple desktops, it is a "New" feature of Apple, apparently.
