View Full Version : Alabama LoCo Map

I have created a Google Map so that we can put in some pins to see where everyone lives. I have a Frappr Map for it, but the service was acting weird for me and Jason.
Anyway, here is the Google Map:
http://snurl.com/ubuntualmap
If anyone has any trouble putting their pin in, post there name (real name preferably) and their city and I will get it on there.
I got this idea from the Louisiana Team. They have a very nice site setup at http://laubuntu.axxium.us/. You should stop by and check it out.
Also, watch for some changes in the AlabamaTeam. We are going to try to get to Approved Status with Canonical. It is a simple process, but we need to start coming together and doing some stuff to spread the word about ubuntu. You can see what need to be done to get Approved status here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoGettingApproved.
We are going to need a lot of help, but more details will be provided in a post later today or this weekend.

I can't seem to place a placemark on that map. I can save it to my maps but I cannot add to it. What type of permissions does it allow?
** I also Stickied the thread. That way people do not have to search for it.

It looks like you have to have a Google account to place your own pin on the map. Most of us do nowadays, BUT if you do not have a Google account, and you don't want to get one, email me, PM me, or post here your name and location and I will place them on the map.
For such a small area to represent, it might be better to say City and ZIP, than just City, since there will be a lot of Birmingham's and Huntsville's and such. The best way would be to use your full address, but that is up to your discretion.

Still no go. I have a Google account. I can get a menu that says , get direction from here,Dierctions to here, Zoom in, Zoom out, and center map here. On my other maps there is a place pin option in this menu but I cannot get that option on the LoCo map. Strange stuff.
I rechecked Frappr as well, it is really acting wierd.

Seeing as Michael created it on his account, he will have the only ability to edit the map. We can however, save it to our maps in our Google accounts.
Good job Michael. We can use this in the AL-Loco site for visitors to see that we're a diverse group. Thumbs up!

We NEED to get together and try to get a Tuscaloosa LUG going. I think that with UA here, there should be a decent amount of interest.
I work for the City of Northport at City Hall. We should do lunch sometime.

Put my location down, too. Not experienced enough to be considered a 'grammer. Maybe shade tree hack. Let me know if there will be a meeting of the Ubuntu minds sometime. It's difficult to ask questions to books. Sometimes, the forum sends me on endless goose chases. Glad to know there are more people using LINUX.

Well I'm in Harvest Al just above Huntsville.
I have been playing with Linux since SUSE 9.3 came out and I'm about to take openSUSE 11.2 off my main computer and put Ubuntu 10.04 on. I have 3 laptops and 2 desktops running Linux Ubuntu, openSUSE and Fedora. The Fedora is just for playing around. I make graphics mostly and know a little about web pages.
I found this part of Ubuntu forums but it seems like it's dead last post Nov 2010? I know there are more Ubuntu users in North AL than just 4 by the map so lets get this up and running and get the word out.

There is little to no activity here, but I think a few people still monitor the threads. I now use Ubuntu exclusively as a workstation, run the netbook remix on my netbook, and we have about 10 servers running Ubuntu.

Yea I see little work being done in here.
I'm going to format my big desktop and put Ubuntu 10.04 on it, I have openSUSE 11.2 and its great but have been having a few little problems. Don't know if it's openSUSE or the other programs. Also on the deb side of the house has a few programs I want to try out.
Plus I have a laptop that will not run openSUSE 11.2 or 11.3 with desktop effects on. I booted the live cd of Ubuntu 10.10 and it all work. It's an older laptop about 6 years but has servered me well, it now has Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 on it, it hsa 128 ATI card but will only hold 1GB ram and has a P4 3.06ghz.
