do all of your previous skins (if you had any) work on this beta?

It does for me.
So far, the only difference I see is the file-browser, and that --notrayicon no longer works, but that's not terribly important, as long as Opera remains a solid browser, I'm happy.

Edit: It seems the tray icon is a known bug. And n3tfury, I should mention that the skin I use is the one called Simple, so I don't know if it will work with others, but I'm saying that with me, it's working perfectly.

Is support for embedded video getting better? That's about the only reason I stay with firefox.

Apparently 9.5 already outperforms every other browser by pretty wide margins:

Performance Tests for Opera 9.5 (http://nontroppo.org/timer/kestrel_tests/)

I'm seriously considering switching from Firefox to Opera. Firefox is open source, but that definitely doesn't excuse it from performing so horribly.

I like Opera, but still have no problems with 9.10, but I do use the more recent versions usually.

Is there a reason to upgrade to 9.5? What is new?

Opera is my favourite browser, although I don't dislike others (except IE, but that is understood)

Enjoy, I know I will :)When I first saw this I thought I have been using Opera 9.50 for months but I have been using the Alpha, this is the Beta.

Thanks for the 411.

I love the new sync feature in Opera. It makes web browsing on a dual-boot system a much better experience for me.

That's a big one for me as well... along with the lack of Gnome integration.

9.5 offers the opportunity to sync bookmarks, Speed Dial, etc. to other Opera browsers using a My Opera account (Free, you don't have to use it for anything else).

The address bar search functionality is improved. It's faster and slicker.

There are other reasons, but those are just the major ones. Go to http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/next/ for more.

*sighs* Unfortunately, no, not that I can tell. Except that operapluginwrapper crashes less often. But all the other bugs/features/chronic freak events are still there. Darn.

Well since 9.10, there have been several security fixes. I believe the last one was 9.24, and this version is pretty much just the new features.

I, however, reinstalled 9.24. Opera 9.5 was running wonderfully, but the tray icon was annoying me, plus I'd like to wait until maybe the next release until I start using it on a regular basis. Mainly the latter. Heh.
And as stated in the other Opera thread, the profile for 9.5 will not work in the previous versions, so make sure you have bookmarks, filters, and so on backed up.

The fonts still look nothing short of atrocious.

fonts look great on my system, you must have whacked out fonts, you choose your own or use the default? If default, pick your own man, it's your system.

I'm an opera fan, so i was glad to see how fast it was. 9.5 is the fastest browser i've ever used. For me it plays most streaming videos, but not as many as i can get working 'out of the box' with firefox. I'm just glad to see the competition amongst the browsers is till going strong, as today (and for the forseeable future) they are the single most important app of any OS.

w00t!

I don't like betas though. Any time a program says "This is not stable." my computer uses that as an excuse to break every part of itself, however unrelated. I'll wait, with baited breath.

They look perfect on my system. Try disabling the core X fonts in opera:config

1) Click this link opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableCoreXFonts
2) Untick 'Enable Core X Fonts'
3) Scroll down and click on 'save'

You might have to close/open the browser for it to take effect.

I'm glad to see they are finally doing some substantial work on the Opera's mail client. From www.opera.com (http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/next/):

Opera's built-in Mail application is better than ever, with improvements to speed, performance, stability and usability. Suped up with a new backend and IMAP support, Opera Mail is free to use.

I`ve been upgrading thru all the weeklys of Opera 9.5 without any issues, but now I try to install Opera 9.5 beta and the package installer says "Error: conflicts with the installed package 'opera-static',

how can I fix this?
if I uninstall my current opera I will lose all my wand passwords/mails/etc =(

Happy_Man

Why would you lose all your settings? Settings in Linux are stored separately from applications. So go ahead. Your settings will be right there, trust me.

After a bit more testing I have to admit that 9.5 works pretty well for the most part. The biggest issue I have with it now, is that for certain web-galleries, like the one they have over at christinamultimedia.com attempting to save an image results in saving a .php file instead. I know that this is likely due to code which is in violation of standards, but it's something that Firefox seems to handle ok.

Using Opera's content blocking feature in addition to its site-specific preferences, it's possible to replicate a lot of the features you get while using Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript. It's still not as flexible, though. Using FF with AB+ and NS, you can change your preferences on the fly much better than you can with Opera.

I also have a problem with using Google Reader in Opera. It's slower than when I use GReader in Firefox. GReader in Opera also seems to use a lot more CPU too. A lot of Google stuff is just plain incompatible with Opera, too.

Opera definitely seems faster than Firefox though. Its smooth scrolling is also a lot better than Firefox's. I just wish Opera could blend with my Xfce desktop better.

Good news :D I have used Opera for email for some time now and like it a lot but it has seemed to be forgotten for a long time by the devs. If only they would allow some basic formatting in notes.

darn, the operapluginwrapper alone made me roll back to 9,24 from one of the latest alphas. that thing would crash and if it wasn't crashing, was just gnawing away at my cpu.

the font issue for me is that operas tend to be blurry compared to FF or Epiphany. i'll try your fix MellonCollie, thanks.

I'm using it and it rocks, not too much new features from Opera 9.24, but it definitely seems a lot faster. I just switched to KMail the other day so can't comment on it's mail system (I doubt it could beat KMail anyway since KMail is very specialised at what it does).

It fixes a problem showing text areas with the systems default font colour for me (I have a dark theme on KDE and in 9.24 both the text area background and the text would be black, not it's grey on black like all my KDE programs, except on a couple of sites that screw it up)

Meebo certainly works a lot faster so I suppose that kinda proves the great javascript improvements. I'll post back here when I discover more stuff, but it's all good so far, no crashes or slow-downs, whereas even 9.24 required a restart every couple of hours for me, can't wait for final release (I don't expect any new features but it'll probably be a bit faster and less likely to **** up, which it probably will eventually do).

Hi,

I'm using Opera 3 years now on win xp.I switched to ubuntu and I'm very happy with my new Os.
I will love to update to 9.5 but I have all ready problems with 9.2.4 , the video plugins are not working .
I click to see a video mpg, mpge, wmv and it just loads a blank page , and thats it.
I try to change the plugin setting so it can open the files with totem , this works only for the mpg files i can't see wmv.
I can't switch to Fox ,please any idea why the plugins are not working ??

Thanxxx

With 9.24 you should use Gecko Media Player as a videoplugin. Do not use mplayerplugin or other plugins as they are not correctly working with Opera.

Google for gecko media player. You also need gnome mplayer for it to work (from the same site).

Opera devs are apparently working a lot on opera plugin support atm and that is why it is pretty broken on linux betas.

Thanx for your advice ,

I installed gecko and gnome-player , I change the setting on opera to use only the geco plug ins, but no good.
The only different that I saw it was that instead of blank screen , I saw the skin of gnome-player but still nothing plays on. no mpg or wmv. :(

I'm quoting myself because I am an idiot. I got all antsy and installed it anyway, on both my ubuntus. It crashes all the time (just dissapears, nothing dramatic). Like I said, anything beta doesn't like me. :(

Glad it helped, but Opera 9.51 is out and this thread is a little old.
