ubuntu applets from preferences, administration etc...

i understand that the applets that are found in system->preferences / administration are written in python... yet they are launched though a single executable, there is no invocation of the python interpreter, at least not explicitly.

if they are in-fact written in python, how are the packaged into a single file rather than the .py file? If they are not done in python are they done in C or something else?
