I've heard of it before...there are millions and billions of gallons of saltwater so I see it as a viable alternative

Also it would be good for when the polar Ice caps start melting, we could use a lot of water that way trying to keep down the water levels.

How much energy does it take to separate Hydrogen and Oxygen?

Probably more than you get from it.

That's brilliant so long as the energy used going in to heat up the salty water is less than the energy created from the heat of the flame.

It sounds to me that this is untrue, just like a dynamo hooked up to a motor, it can't be more than 100% efficient.

Fusing deuterium would be a better idea. At least that would be energy positive and won't require burning oil to separate it.
